Mold On My BFWD Clay Bar?

While applying Klasse AIO, I notice that my foam applicators get dirty (not the color of the vehicle). I was wondering if I'm not doing a good enough job washing - most likely around trim and such, or is this just the cleaners in the AIO pulling contaminants off of the paint?

Also, is it OK to wash (in machine) my cotton chenille wash mitt with the MF towels and other towels? Will the wash mitt trap dirt particles that should be rinsed away? When I did this, I noticed black particles on my mitt, but it didn't feel like it was hard or abrasive.

Thanks

dont forget even if a formula does not contain so called "cleaners", it does contain some solvents that clean pretty darn good......and in your case, better than your weekly car wash. i wouldn't sweat it, but if you want to address it, clay the car, wash, and add another coat of KLASSE.

I hand wash my applicators in liquid tide.

wash mine in warm water and squeeze and rub them together... should I get some sort of soap to wash my applicator's and towels with? I wash my towels by hand too (most of them).

The dirt you are seeing on the applicator is probably stuff the cleaners in the AIO is pulling off the paint. Also if you hit the black trim around your windows it can leave black stuff on the applicator. Once you see the applicator getting dirty, switch to a new one. No need to take the chance of dirt being on the applicator and then rubbing it into you car paint.

Wash the MF towels seprate, dont put anything in their with them. Use some liquid detergent with no bleach, and no fabric softener. You can put your wash mitt in the washing machine, but some have had problems with them falling apart after doing so. I would wash the mitt alone also, especially if it is very dirty, you dont want any of that dirt to get embeded into your towels.

I find the cotton and not foam applicators work great for cleaning when applying AIO. I do 2 coats one right after another to ensure I did not miss any spots. I use foam applicators for applying the SG.

Showroom is right. If you notice this happening to your pad, then its much safer to just switch to another one. As for the washing question, I don't think its a very good idea to wash a wash mitt that is full of dirt, grime, sand, and who knows what else with a microfiber towel. Actually its a very BAD idea. Laters.

Don is correct don't wash a MF towel and wash mitt together , the mitts fibers get all over the MF towels and it's a pita to remove them , don't ask me how i know this:rolleyes:

I am rather new at all this but I do have quite a bit of experience with laundry, stain removal, etc., so I'll share my views on this. I would think soaking in a bucket of liquid detergent several days, hand squeezing, rinsing, then soaking again, hand squeezing, and really rinsing well would get most of the stuff out.

For tough stains the long soaking bit helps the detergent loosen dirt from the fibers, so that's what I'll try as I imagine all this cleaner, wax, etc. stuff is even more heck to get out than a normal stain!

Waxman: I wondered myself about using foam for the SG. Why do you think it works better than the cloth applicators?

MF applicators are usually light in color, so if it get's dirty you can really see it right away. The whole point of sythetic fibers is durability and ease of use. If you wash your applicator with dawn or ever just rinse as you apply the AIO.

I always recommend that you rinse out the applicator very well (and wring it very well) after every panel. You should also follow a good panel order so that the dirtiest panels are AIO'd last. I go, hood, trunk, roof, upper panels then front back, and finally lower panels.

Sythetic fibers are easily cleaned, just rinse it very well frequently.

No sense of tossing the applicator, just turn it over ;)

I got in my cabinet last night to get some QD and when I moved my BFWD Clay Bar (it's stored in a plastic bag with a couple of sprays of QD) I noticed there was mold growing on it!

What did I do wrong? I thought the proper storing procedure was hit it with a couple of QD sprays, then put it in an air tight ziplock, which is what I did.

Anyone ever have their clay bar grow mold?? I would imagine it will still be okay, I will try to clean it off prior to using the rest of it.

:scared: :scared: :scared: :scared: :scared:

Never seen it but it's not surprising. Must be some organic stuff in the clay or spray that the mold likes!

I follow the same routine as you but haven't had a problem (yet) - but I'll keep an eye open for this condition.

If it grosses you out, throw it out.

Regards,
GEWB

The QD mist is a myth. If your not going to be using your clay for a week or more you should always store it bone dry.

I would probally let it soak in a jar of soapy water and see what happens. Might be time to just ditch that stuff as mold spores can cause some major lung damage

At the very least I would demote it to rocker panel/ wheel/ tar duty :soldier:

Yeah, I'll probably retire it or bleach it and use it for the worst areas of some car.

I've had some clay bars stored in zip lock bags with a "mist" of QD for over a year... no mold! (I use either Zaino or Meg's clay)

That's a new one on me! Did you have a sandwich in that baggie with it???!!!:devil:

HA, no sandwiches. I've used this method many times as well and never seen anything like it. Heck, it's even in a closed cabinet in the garage, so it never sees sunlight.

I'll see if I can snap a pic of it, it's pretty gross.

Here you go, sorry for the crappy Palm Pre pics.
