A lady i work with asked me today if i could get rid of mold inside a car. I guess her daughter left her convertable top down and it rained and she never dried anything out. Now there is mold in the carpet. Can this be cleaned and taken out or will the carpet need to be replaced? What do i use to clean it? She said she went to a professional detailer and they said it would be about $200.00 for them to do it. If i do it how much should i charge? Thanks for the replys...

Mildew / Mould:

Dirt and moisture are essential to mildew propagation, Remove the seats and thoroughly clean the carpet with a carpet cleaner/extractor and a disinfectant. The carpet backing will absorb the most, spray the affected areas with a disinfectant (both the carpet backing and the carpet) clean the carpet using an extractorâ€â„¢s upholstery attachment, and then re-install the seats.

Methodology

·To eliminate the bacteria that creates mildew use a medium soft brush and a 4:1 solution distilled water / Ammonia and then rinse with cool clean water

·For tough stains use a mixture of one (1 tspn) teaspoon Ammonia / quarter (0.25) cup Hydrogen Peroxide / three (0.75) cup distilled water and then rinse with cool clean water

·Once fabric is thoroughly dry apply a fabric protection (303TM High Tech Fabric Guard)

·Change the cabin air filter (s)

·Clean the headliner as this also â€Ëœtrapsâ€â„¢ the smell from mould.

·Finally use an air sanitizer/freshener (Lysol Neutra Air®) that quickly removes odours from the air.

To eliminate the musty smell use an odour-neutralizing mineral made from porous volcanic rock (Elite®). This type of product absorbs odours, eliminates stale musty air, and will reduce any noxious oil or gasoline fumes. It is non-toxic and when it stops working can be re-charged by warming in a microwave or in the sun, or lightly dust carpets with baking soda. Spray with an air neutralising disinfectant (Lysol Neutra Air®) that is non-toxic, non-allergenic, fast acting without a cover up scent or an offensive perfume smell

Like most interior detailing its very labour intensive so adjust your charges accordingly

I would also try Lysol fabric refresher, as it kills mold and is made for fabric.

If you have access to an ozone generator, it will kill the mold and smell also.

Most newer cars have a rubber backing on the carpet, so the water probably didn't soak the underpadding.

And yes charge extra but you should be able to do it for less than $200.
