Mobile Detailers and Insurance

I have heard that some have a $1 million policy, and some have a 250K policy....

i would think that if you are busy enough and doing a lot of higher end cars, then a higher policy the better. but if you are not doing lambos, ferraris, maserati's, and only have yourself and maybe one other person doing the work, then a lower policy might fit you better.

I'm looking into the insurance stuff also, so I'll keep up on this thread. I have insurance if the work is done at my home, but not mobile.

Toyotaguy--what insurance do you have?

my dad is an insurance agent and he looked into an insurance coverage for me... i think he said a $100,000 coverage account will cost $700/yr

$1-2M is the minimum liability you should have. The liability does not cover the actual car you are working on, just if somebody trips on the extension cord you have going across the garage, ect. So if they sue you you are covered.

Garagekeepers Coverage-Would cover the actual car you are working on. Say if you had to drive it back to the customer, ect.

If you are at a fixed location it will be less, a mobile detailer will pay more.

Just to play devil's advocate.....

What could a mobile detailer do to be exposed to $1million (or more) of liability? That's some major damage. You'd have to burn down a house and kill their whole family. Then, they still wouldn't be able to go after your marital assets. (OTOH - I realize some accounts require $1 million).

As of my last inquiry, the difference between 1M and 2M is reflected in my premium by less a day and a half of work. . . . seemed negligible considering that some of the residences in which I complete my work are well into eight figures.

I'm sure the difference is minimal for the additional limits, but in what scenario would anyone need that much liability or create that much damage? I don't see car detailing opening up that much exposure to someone. Especially if you're not driving people's vehicles. I trying to brainstorm, please don't feel I'm trying to :argue

When I was operating in Minneapolis, we had to have at least a $1M premium to work in the high-rise buildings because of the possible cost of 'structural damage'.

My insurance coverage actually isn't for protection. I never have had to make a claim in my 19 years in business.

It is a marketing tool. I get to detail high end vehicles and get on some pretty fancy property because I have insurance.

David, I am thinking like the devil too...LOL

I cannot see anything needing a multimillion dollar insurance policy...especially when no driving of cars is being done, other than reparking a couple when I wash them in an empty parking lot, behind buildings, off to the side where no one else parks, or drives...

but I do see the others point...some people wont use your services because youre not insured. Working on a lambo or ferrari is a lot different than a honda, but still...worth $1million????

GI insurance doesn't cover the vehicle. It covers people and property.

Lets say your working on a Honda civic in an underground parking garage. Your doing the interior and accidentally knock it into neutral, it rolls down one of the ramps and hits somebody before plowing into an elevator shaft. The person is injured badly and the elevtor is destroyed.

Can you see how 1 million hardly seems like enough?

Come on...a Civic do that?? Hahaha Throw the e-brake on, no one gets run over and no elevator shafts gets destroyed! :xyxthumbs

But I see where your coming from. Personally, I have Garage Keepers Insurance, because I am driving cars back and forth. General Liability, no, because I have no one working for me. If something happens to me personally, I have personal insurance to cover that...or thats how I see it.

If i were to have an employee work with me, I would have to invest in GLI.

Just look into your area and ask around parking garages, building management, etc. I wanted to get into a parking garage here in houston to do weekly clients in but I had to have a 1mil policy, atleast. Other places don't even ask if I have any. So just ask around. Oh and 1mil for me is 83 a month. Not too shabby.

This appears to be a trend in the insurance industry. The previous company that I had for insurance dropped auto detailers as of last year. My agent also said there is not too many insurance companies who insure detailing businesses. I imagine this has something to do with the reputation and image our industry has. There are so many 'fly by night' detailers who only operate for a year or so and move on.

I hope that none of you are relying on your home owners insurance to cover your commercial activities...

I'm just sayin'...
