Miscellaneous Ramblings: Sponges at Home Depot

I had noticed some discussion on sponges this past week and various options found at Home Depot. My beloved P21S sponge is just about worn out and I consider it to be nearly "perfect" for wheel cleaning on my cars and offers good durability. I've tried the cheapie 6 packs of sponges from Walmat, etc. They have not held up wheel and seem to disintegrate after a few uses.

Here's what I found at HD >>

a single from the paint dept @ $1.97:

a 2-pk found in the tile/grouting deptpartment @ $3.69, hydrophilic*:

cross-section of sponge (I'll cut these sponges in 1/3 sections to make them usable):

These are man-ly sponges. While I have not tried the sponges on the cars yet, I did permit my son to use them to clean his Razor scooter and his report was highly favorable :2thumbs:

I did see sponges in several other areas of the store. This type of sponge seems to be what I am after. Also, I noticed a special on FOLEX. Quart bottles had been marked down to $3.97 (from a claimed price of nearly $20).

I'd also like to take this opportunity to mention that Werkstatt and I took 1st place at the regional MBz show last weekend! :spot

Hmmm...I had about forgotten about those sponges...

I'm going to make you all grout sponge users!:D

I use the bulk ones that are loose in the bins. They are the softest that I've found at HD.

intresting discussion. Anyone know of any threads that dicuss the differences between quality sponges v. say sheeps or chanelle?

Mach, speaking personally, these are for use on wheels and maybe cleaning the dirtiest portion of rocker panels only.

The ones that Spoiledman talks about in the loose bins can be used on paint, the ones you have pictured do look a little rough, I'll take a picture of my sponges that I got from HD when I get home from work.

I use those quickie sponges to clean the really dirty lower portions, rockers, bumpers and on the filthy areas like the wheels (including the barrell). Stoped using them on the paint though. I use Optimum No Rinse nowadays, 4 Poorboys mega towels with silk binding will do the whole car with constant turning of the towel.

I'm a dedicated cotton chenille user when it comes to the body of the car. :)

I stopped using those because of the marring that they were causing to my soft paint. :nixweiss

Spoiledman,

I guess we're just spoiled to see the joys of using those sponges. I know I won't go back to any mitt! :chuckle: My wash induced marring has basically diminished!

I've used a bunch of them and not only are they more abrasive than the grout sponge that I use, they're not as easy to use with the hoseless wash that I use. I just gave one to an *old* lady that still washes her car. It was showing very little wear after nearly a year.

You guys are using the grout sponges for paint? I tried the one posted above from Home Depot and it was mar city for me.

Can you guys give me the link to the discussion, or let me know which sponges you guys use?

It's hard for me to believe that they would be better than a sheepskin mitt, but I am always open to new experiences. :D

A little background. My car gets a "sponge" bath using ONR every other week and sometimes every week. It is QD'd every time the cover goes on or comes off. It hasn't been polished since January or February of this year. No sealant applied in at least 5 months but possibly longer.

Hmm, I agree completely! But, I don't have as near an open mind about it when it comes to washing my car with them. I'll stick to my tried and true 100% cotton mitts...

Mike, the worse that you would have to do is re polish the affected areas if it cause any marring. You're out a whole two bucks.

If using the sponges in this post on paint, you probably will get marring. The ones in the large bins are of a whole different texture IMO.

I'll have pics in about an hour of the sponge
