Mini ipod or 20 GB

I have a gift certificate ($140) and was thinking about buying the mini or the 20GB. I really don't want to have to pull that much more out of pocket to pay for this but then I figure more than half of it is paid for so maybe I should go for it. I was leaning towards the mini because of it's size, metal case, and battery life. I can't imagine reaching the capacity of 1000 songs. I have an iriver that holds 30 songs so anything is an upgrade. I mainly use it for the gym and yard work so this is not going with me every where. Other than storage space is there any reason why I should spend the extra money for the 20GB. I just wish they would come out with one with an FM tuner built in. I just hate buying technology items knowing that there is going to be a better one a year or two from now. If I keep waiting I'll never buy anything.

I didn't think that I was going to reach 1000 songs but it's a lot less than it seems (especially when you work at sony). Get the 20 GB you'll never know what you want to listen to on a given day and having everything there is going to make it easier. Plus the price has dropped on the older 5th gen ones without the color screen.

I've got a 4GB mini that I use while detailing, working out, etc. I much prefer the size over the larger iPods, and I rotate about 10 gigs of music through it, so I have diffierent selections from day to day. I highly reccomend the mini, it fits more easily in a pocket, but if you have a big collection and 1000 songs isn't enough for you, the 20 will hold over 5,000.

You guys and technology :chuckle:

I use an old Jukebox while I am detailing :spot Holds 100 7" singles :woohoo:

being a huge macintosh fan....i would suggest the 20 gig. especially now that it comes with the color screen and it allows you to save digital pics to it. now you can carry your music and pics of the cars you've worked on in a little portable drive.

if you DO decide to go for the 20 gig color (you can get some of the older 20 gig non color for about 260 ish now, check macmall.com ) the 30 gig color is only 30 bucks more. 50% more capacity for 30 bucks. That's probably what I'm going to end up getting in the near future, but it depends where your gift certificate is to. But I would definately go with the 20 gig one.

Oh even better if you're a student. Buy it from an apple store or their online store and receive 20% or so off. I got my iPod mini for $194 shipped and taxed.

How do you get the % off from apple? There some place to enter a rebate code or something? I'm seriously looking into getting one in the near future. and if I can get 25% off, that may just clinch the deal.

I went with the mini ipod. The size is the main thing. I already carry enough stuff with me. As for the songs on it, I have 300 something on there and am pretty happy with it. My music collection is HUGE, but I just picked out all of my absolute favorite songs to put on it. Most of my songs I would only want to listen to on occasion.

I went with a 30G (and in your case would go with 20G), I just use it too much and wouldn't want to have to worry about filling it up or deleting files to make room for more. Every since I integrated the ipod into my car I'm especially happy I went with a larger version since I practically leave it in the car on random whenever I am driving.

I am thinking about the 30 gig too, how do you like it? A few places still have them (newegg I know has some left) and I was thinking about ordering a 30 gig ... guess I'm wondering if it's worth the $330, I just need that final push, you know.

Ya, I know what you mean. I can't really comment on if the 30g is substantially better than the mini or 20g, because I don't own them. I did own an Iriver 20G before the ipod and I liked it a lot, but it was unintuitive and the hard drive died after a year, so I went with the 30G ipod. So far (6 months or so), I've been very happy with it. It's intuitive and the sound is good (get real headphones though, the buds they supply are trash), the only downsides for me were having to buy a protective shield for it (about $20) and the battery life could be longer. I'd say you get 8 hours of playback, but if you let the backlight stay on a lot that can be cut in half. Luckily it's easy to charge.

On the plus side mine is a photo, so I use it to hold digital photos, and the playlists are easy to manage and it's super easy to use, light, and pretty durable with a case. If you can integrate it into your car it's pretty awesome. I almost never drive without it on now.

Yeah, I ended up just ordering one. It's not going to come for like a week and a half (stupid me, picking free shipping), but I think I will be pleased with it. I'm really looking foreward to getting it. I guess the upshot is that I now have over a week to load all of my cd's into my computer, already have some done from before, but gotta get the rest now.
