Well i have a regular customer that i detail/wash their cars every other weekend. They ended taking this black excursion that had just been painted 2 months before to the ming detail shop. I come over the next weekend to find out it was ming'd well there were swirls all over the excursion from the bodyshop that painted it.:( I was going to take care of this for them when they told me it was ming'd now the pamphlet says you cant wax the vehicle for 2 years or youll ruin the ming mirror finish.

I talked to the owner who tried to make me look stupid and didnt do to good a job of doing it. His reply was that they req liquify the paint by closing th pores of the paint so you dont have to wax your vehicle i asked them when they get to the final process if they used a sealat he said its not a sealant its a process :nixweiss i doubt that if this guys has been detailing for 30years has a process that no one else knows it seems more like a scam :hm Other wise he'd make more money teaching others how to do this. what do you guys think

heres the site

I remember the ming guys. Around here they refused to do black cars. Then they started refusing to do dark colored cars. Then they disappeared! The whole reliquify the paint thing sounds too good to be true especially since the paints now dry via a catalyst. Wonder if this ming guy knows what temperature has to be reached to reliquify the paint?

From the description of the process, it sounds like they are polishing to achieve a smooth finish and leaving the paint totally unprotected.

No, no, Steve. Didn't you read their copy?? The paint is liquefied and magically re-cures, effectively sealing and protecting itself  :D

Effective marketing, though. I'm sure if they say you can't wax it, then you can't wash it either. They'll have professional Ming auto washers perform maintenance on your car, along with the all-important third step (inspection).

"The Mirror Finish, a unique process, utilizes a wool bonnet to heat a small area of the paint and to close the paint pores, while select chemicals keep the paint lubricated during the process. There are no chemicals, waxes or coatings left on the paint."

What's the difference in this and any other detailer's proper use of a rotary with a wool pad? Considering you can only heat to a point, before burning through the clear-coat or paint. And we all use our favorite (read "select") chemicals to keep the paint luricated during the process. I guess our waxes and "coatings" are just a waste.

well my friend used to work there and he said all they did was wetsand vehicles then buffem out. If you look at the diagram showing the paint along with the paint conditions here

http://www.mingsa.com/High/Frames_high.htm

it looks exactly like the one on this page from CMA

well after reading that its guaranteed. i remember speaking with a lady from one company telling me the secret behing the sealant with a warranty. well you charge X amount for a sealant with a warranty and the customer will most likely pay for it since its warrantied. If they feel like the vehicle doesnt look as good as it did when you first did it (lets say 9 months later) you redo it. It only takes you 30min to an hour to reapply a sealant. Its a good way to make money but i wouldnt do it......

Good old fashioned elbow grease. Not a good thing with today's paints. I don't like how that guy is holding the buffer. Looks like he's using all the strength he has to keep the buffer hard pressed against the surface.

NOT A GOOD IDEA

Wool bonnets - not good either unless your a rotary guru.

The photos are shot too far away to see any swirls etc and are very blurry.

well, some people just can't be convinced that their way may not be the best way. it might not be worth your time and troubles trying to convince them otherwise.

ah well, you should just give your former customer your card and tell him to call you when he's fed up being ming'd. :D

and anyone notice that the before and after shots have different levels of brightness?

I think it's just shot at a different time of day, judging by the vehicle's shadow.

Reading the info on that page just sounds like they take everything that is talked about here, but use more exclusive sounding words.

Jay,

The Ming shop here in town has burned through more paint in the years of their being in business than perhaps all the newb's on this forum!!

I have talked with the paint spot repair guys and they love the MingDing shop as they give them lots of business:D

First, on todays paints the clear coat IS the sealer to the pigmented paint.....there is no need to "close" the pores of the paint because there are no pores that need to be closed! That's just plain freakin hogwash.....it's like going to a place where they use tech talk to sell you something you really don't need.

Second, on todays paints if you remove too much of the clear then you also remove the protective UV. I hate to see what happens when they MingDing a new Mercedes Ceramiclear:nono

Lastly......I'll maybe take a trip over there with you one day:p

Also the Ming people in California used to buy Meguairs #7 by the bloody pallet!! Imean crates of the stuff so it makes me wonder if the "Ming" is just #7 applied with a buffer:nixweiss

Anthony

I took a look at their photo album and it seems that those photos where taken in the 70's.

I guess the ming thing was made for when the paint had no clear, was mostly Pb and good sealants were not available to the public.

Hey anytime I can have a pic of me HOLDING my stripper (insert pun here) with my cardigan sweater on (insert NEXT pun here)....I'm all for it. forget the fact that my info is rubbish or that I am going to ruin tons of cars with my work, its the fact that I can screw 40 people per month or so with cheap details and as long as the sign the contract that says we are not liable...well hell I am going to have great sweaters for years to come. heh...dont worry people when they have burned through all the cars that are in your area, the owners will come back telling "How could I have ever doubted you" :p :bow the only issue is this.........can you save the paint THIS time ? thats the real test.
