Micro-marring with Zaino all in one?

I recently did my corvette with z-all in one and I pulled car into the sun and noticed very fine swirling in paint. I had to re-do car with 85rd and it came out perfect. My question is why did it make these micro-marring swirls in paint. I used A PC with a black pad on speed 4.5, I did 3 passes.

I have never had any marring with AIO, even using an orange or yellow pad. Did you pick up some grit? Or push too hard not allowing buffer head to spin freely?

I used medium pressure and I am always very careful about any grit on my pad. I could also see faint outline of the semi circle of my pad being repeated every half inch on some parts of my finish it was excess all in one polish very faint. I was able to remove by hand and micro fiber cloth but it was very difficult.

Huh, I've had ZAIO mar plastics (that I usually use KAIO on without issues), but haven't had it happen on paint. No problems on paint I'd assume to be softer than that on your 'vette. Hmmm...that really surprises me  :nixweiss

Did you use ZAIO on painted plastic car body parts like bumper and front end, is that what you mean?

Sorry, I wasn't clear. No, I meant on the unpainted black plastic parts (I do use it on painted plastics too). It's not like it always mars such surfaces, but it can do it on some of 'em. It really hazed up the black plastic parts of the A8's sideview mirrors (smooth, satin-finish black plastic) and I had to use a number of increasingly mild abrasives to fix it.

I just did the Crown Vic with ZAIO yesterday. That Ford clear is a lot softer than the GM stuff I've worked on and the ZAIO didn't cause any micromarring on it. So I'm still kinda stumped about why it hazed your Corvette.

Maybe the marring was already there and the cleaners in ZAIO revealed them? The 085rd could of slightly filled in or covered the marring. If you are getting the "pad circles" when using ZAIO it is possible you are using too much.

I was thinking that myself, and maybe too much product could also lead to the abrasives not breaking down properly (even though I'd still be surprised by micromarring on hard clear). When I ZAIOed the Crown Vic last weekend I was deliberately using very little product, less than I would probably use with, say....KAIO or SRP.

Those semi-circles really do sound like a) too much product and, b) an unevel application of product. I'd try less ZAIO, worked longer, and I'd work smaller areas at a time. Remember that despite being an AIO, this stuff is still primarily a sealant and IMO the "use so little you can't easily see it on the paint" still applies.

EDIT: Gee, I see "Crown Vic" auto-links to a for sale site  Don't blame me :grinno:

I haven't had any issues with it marring, in fact I find it works very well as a finishing polish. Not saying it can't happen, but what you need to do to be sure is:

- polish a small area to perfection

- do at least a double IPA wipedown

- examine the surface

- wet a brand new applicator pad with water and apply to the surface

- examine the surface, verify that the applicator did not cause marring

- wipe down the surface with your buffing towel

- examine the surface, verify that your buffing towel is not causing marring

- apply ZAIO with a brand new applicator

- examine for marring

The above steps will rule out any other causes.
