MF's for hand polishing?

I haven't used any MF towels except for 3m's yellow cloths and when I am hand polishing it only takes stuff off when there's only a little left. Did I just get the wrong MF towels or are they just for the final wipes? Lately I've been using terry towels until the majority is off. :nixweiss

How much residue are we talking about here? It almost sounds like you use so much product that it's almost caked on like icing or something....

What exactly have you been doing?

3M SMR and IHG. I think one of my problems is that I'm not working it until it's dry. When hand polishing do you work the product in till it is "dust"? Should I apply more product every 2x2 area? It always seems like after I do an area there's always some left over to spread on the next area. Should my pad be virtually dry when I'm finished with one area?

Damn, I really need to brush up on my technique :(

Well by hand, using SMR shouldn't use all that much product. Remember that only so much polish can contact the paint at any one time. It's hard to describe, but I try to use enough to get a thin but even "coat" of product on the area I'm polishing. I don't really know much about "dusting", but I just stop when the polish is starting to dry out and vanish, but not totally dry because it's bad to do any dry rubbing. The size of the area doesn't really matter - just do whatever's comfortable, but not too big. Personally, 2x2 is a bit larger than I'd do myself. Do one area until you're happy, stop and buff it off, then move on to the next area. At least, that's what I did when I was polishing by hand...

With IHG, you may want to try searching for some techniques on using it, as I've heard it can be picky. Since it's just a glaze though, I imagine you'd be using even less of it since it's just something you lay on the paint in a thin coat to add gloss.

Maybe you SHOULD look into some better MF's. I've taken off some VERY heavy applications of all kinds of products with my YoSteve MF's, they work like magic. Even when I intentionally put stuff on as thick as you can imagine, just to see what would happen.

Also, yes, *I* generally work MOST products in until they're almost gone/dry, whether working by hand OR machine. But there are exceptions (VM comes to mind).
