Menzerna Powergloss

I had used Menzerna Powergloss for the first time last Friday with my new Makita and a LC Yellow cut pad.

Check out my detail for the March Entry: http://autopia.org/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=51764&perpage=24&pagenumber=1

My questions are probably more geared for the people that have used the product. I was wondering what methods have some of you used the powergloss. Its reeeaaally thick stuff. I had the pad load up completely after half a panel or so. The dusting seems to really be bad as well. I was wondering if there were any tips or tricks for using this particular product?? I drew one line of powergloss across the pad and one line vertically across the pad, Im assuming after my expierence with it, that I was using too much??

Any thoughts or advice would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Chris

keep the pad wet, but not drenched. when you start to see the dusting or it starts to gum up, spray the pad with a little water or re-apply a little product if necessary.

Once the pad is prepped try lying a line of product on the surface and picking it up with the rotary. Its actually a lot easier than it sounds and really helps prevent splatter.

Yup, keep the pad damp, and try putting the polish on the surface with an applicator instead of applying to pad. Nothing you can do though that is a thick a** product. They don't call it powergloss for nothing. If Powergloss could talk it would say,

"I'm a damn swirl hunter and I'm in a bad mood, any questions?"

I guess periodic pad spray with water would be a good idea. I did prime the pad with water intially before I started. I think i didnt keep the pad moist enough throughout though. Thanks!

Well Menzerna Powergloss is a Rubbing Compound.

Here is part of the abrasive list:

COMPOUNDS, POLISHES AND GLAZES SORTED BY CUTTING ABILITY

Disclaimer:

Cutting action can differ significantly based on application (e.g. hand use vs. rotary). This list is an approximate indication of the cutting ability of polishes based on the circumstance they are most likely to be used under. Products are ranked by scratch removal ability, not filling or "cleaning/oxidation removal" ability. Consider the error to be plus or minus one ranking. Nice Lotus Elise in the Pic if im not mistaken. I saw on eon the road the other day, cant believe how small they are in real life!!!

Thanks for the info. I've gone a little crazy lately and bought most of the Menzerna line available in the U.S. Hopefully I will never need Powergloss.

Yes, that's my Elise. Strange feeling looking up at Boxsters on the freeway, let me tell you!

LOL, those boxters are monsters to you now! I read about the Lotus Elise. Great performance all around and not toooo expensive. Around $40k I believe??

Anways, Menzerna Powergloss is really Rotary only use. I have used IP and FPII with PC getting great success. I wouldnt try Powergloss unless you have a rotary. Funny thing is that I will probably never need Powergloss for my vehicles (parents and mine) but I bought it specifically for the customer vehichles that I detail since they are usually in reeeaallly bad shape. You may want to try Poorboys SSR2.5 with a cutting pad via PC if you want something a touch stronger than Menzerna IP

Just a little more than $40k to start. Mine was a touch under $50k out the door.

I've been using IP and FP with a PC and then work very well, but IP seems like it has slightly less bite than 3M FI-II. Probably need to work it in for longer.

I feel IP with a PC can do pretty well if worked in properly. I use it for "light swirls". Now IP with the Rotary seems to make it a whole different ball game when removing swirls. With the rotary I can remove more swirls better AND faster than I could with SSR2.5 via PC. I guess the benefits of using a rotary. I havent had a chance to try 3M products. I love Menzerna and i dont see my self changing products for my polishes anytime soon. The other two polishing lines I have tried are 1Z Upp and PP and the SSR line from Poorboys. I must say that I favor PB's SSR's over the 1Z line for ease of use and results.

Grab a rotary pad cleaner from Top of the Line or elsewhere. PG DOES load up pretty quickly, but with a pad cleaner, there should be no problem. I do have to clean the pad between every panel (unusual), but PG is fantastic. PG-->LSP if you work it right:up

I've only tried PG with a 4" spot pad, but it worked very effectively with a PC.

I found that I needed to mist the pad frequently as the PG didn't all break down as I thought.

Because of this, every time I misted the pad, it brought to life lots of *in tact* PG abrasives and didn't need to add more.

That way my pad never got over-loaded.

Does it do any good to slightly dilute PG?

I guess misting the pad every so often does somewhat dilute it if you think about it. I think my two problems were using too much product per area and not keep the pad moist. I still got the PG to do its job on the detail I did, but it was a PITA and took a lot more time then i had anticipated.

When I last used IP, I used a mist of 50/50 ISA /water to allow more work time to break the IP down I was using a PC. Menzerna claims that PG is double concentration IP, as opposed to a larger particled heavy duty rubbing compound. Theory is that it will cut twice as fast due to higher particle count. Maybe it takes twice as long to break down the concentrated polish due to that higher number of individual abrasive particles.... so misting might make a big difference, also adding a smaller initial amount might help. To me it sounds as if the PG needs a rotary to break it down efficiently, plus misting to extend the work time.

PG is a 1000 grit compound so last resort product, after that it's wet/dry sanding

Found it very hard to get out of the container sometimes

I applied a 6 inch line to the surface and ran the pad over it to spread it over the whole panel and prep the pad

Then a quick mist of water on the surface and three sprays on the pad

Overlapping passes with little or no pressure

Just before moving to next panel, I mist the pad again and re buff to a great shine

A wonderful product. Best gloss of any cutting compound

PG, if you work it long enough, can de-marr and leave the surface shiney enough for your finish. I have seen this while polishing, but I wasn't tempted, since I almost always use FP as the last polish, to get the paint as bright as I can, before any finish.
