Menzerna PO83 vs PO85u, too much overlap?

Hi, I have a new bottle of PO83 and a new bottle of PO85u. I was initially going to send the PO85u back and exchange it because I wanted a super light jewelling polish instead but now I am wondering if I should keep it and ADD another polish to have a better arsenal.

Are SIP and original FP too close in application to justify having both, or are there instances when it would be good to have a choice between the 2?

Cars will be relatives Audi's, Lexus, Ford, Honda, GM, etc. Machine is a PC with various LC 5 1/4 pads.

Thanks,
John

Welcome aboard JohnnyB. and I would keep them and maybe add some more polishes to your line up. Maybe Menzerna Super Finish PO106FA or Menzerna Power Finish PO203 are great polishes are some to look at.

I will say this, without any bias- PAC customer service is second to none

Hi John and welcome to the forum!!!

Menzerna PO83q Intensive Polish (the Super name was added after, but it does sound good) is a great medium cut polish that can remove moderately serious defects with little effort and finishes down to a very nice gloss. However it probably needs to be followed with a 'finishing' polishing to get the best refinement and even more gloss.

Menzerna PO85u Final Polish (not to be confused with PO87mf Final Polish or PO87mc Final Polish II) is a very nice final polish, which replaced PO87mc (FPII) on most factory lines IRC. It doesn't have near as much cut as SIP but will produce a higher gloss, more swirl free finish. It should be used after PO83q 'Super' Intensive Polish to produce the best results.

So you have two different products that really do two different jobs. One is used primarily for defect removal and one is used to for extremely light polishing and bringing out the final gloss.

Since Proper Auto Care was solely responsible for introducing Menzerna to the US market, it would make sense on some level that we would carry PO85u, particularly as it is the replacement for Final Polish II. However you have to remember that these polishes are all designed to be used on fresh paint, in the assembly line environment, on high speed pneumatic dual action polishers. Basically we, as the end user, adopt these polishes for our own needs.

For example, PO106ff was a factory replacement for PO85rd. That is PO106ff, according to manufacturers standard, does everything PO85rd does, and better. However, in our twisted world of detailing, most people prefer PO85rd for final polishing, believing that it leaves behind a better finish with more gloss. Our standards are much higher than the OEM's standard and we are less concerned about time savings as much as final gloss.

So while PO85u is the factory replacement for PO87mc, in most cases I feel that PO87mc out performs PO85u given the way that we tend to use it. I'm not saying that PO85u is a bad polish, but if we where to carry it, it would just be to have another number in the line, as it offers no benefits to our current lineup.

If you are going to use 85u, I would make the following recommendations based on my experience. 1) Use VERY little product, as a little bit goes very far, and if you use too much you will never get it to break down. 2) Prepare to spend a LONG time using. On a rotary polisher it takes about 3 minutes, give or take, to break the polish down using high speed and moderate pressure. On a dual action polisher it is going to take even longer.

Otherwise it is a joy to use and should produce a gloss on par with PO87mc, even if it takes longer to achieve.

Best of luck and I hope I helped answer your questions!

Todd

Guys, thanks for the excellent help, I'll keep it and mess around with it for awhile.

It's ironic, the very first internet order I made (years ago) was for detailing supplies from properautocare. In fact, I just found a black finishing pad with their name on the back, still in it's original wrapper. That's how I found the forum.

It's good to be back
