Menzerna or Optimum for VW paint?

Hey guys, I'm sure this has been covered before, but since I'm a newbie to the site I think I can get a free pass ;)



Anyways, I have a 2001 jetta thats seen its fair share of use. In the 5 years I've owned it, its never had a professional detail. Anyways, I want to pick up a porter cable DA but I'm having a hard time deciding between using Menzerna SIP and nanopolish or Optimum compound and polish. What would be easier to use and have the best results?



What are your guys recommendations?

meguiars 105 and meguiars 205 work well with a porter cable but i would pick up some menzerna po85rd to increase the gloss. You would probably need something like 105 to remove defects if the car has never been professionally detailed to get flawless results and i would also throw in some purple foamed wool pads

M105 + 5.5 or 4" Orange pads. You might want to pick up some 4" PFW pads as well.



MK4 clear is hard as hell. You're probably going to need to do multiple passes to get semi-decent correction using a PC.

pfw = purple foamed wool. i think optimum or menzerna or even the 3m stuff will work fine. 4" pads are what you'll need for correction. 5.5" for applying lsp will be fine but you can do it with 4" as well. i'd probably on buy 4" pads if it were me.
 
with the smaller machines like the 7424 they don't have the power to make larger pads work properly. i've noticed that with larger pads that i didn't get the correction i was looking for or it took a really long time to get there. the 4" pads gave me much faster and better results than the larger pads. the larger pads are fine for glazes and waxes, and sealants. you could probably use the larger pads with the kevin brown method and get good results, only i don't think either of the products you've asked about will work with the kb method. you'll need to look at something like the m205 and m105 if you use the kb method.
 
Just finished with a VW Gti today. Like what jrose0070 mentioned, M105 and M205 will serve your needs very well and 85RD will add that extra bit to the finish.

Have you ever tried to polish MK4 VW Paint?
 
doesn't seem and harder that audi paint. i've been using a flex for a while now so don't really member using a pc on a mk 4. with 4" pads and time it'll get there. maybe the kb method is what you'll need on the mk 4. my brother in law just got a mk 4 so i'll have get out the pc and give it a try.
 
If you're using a PC, you don't need PFW...it would do more harm than good. If you're using a Flex DA or rotary, go ahead and get the wool. As others have said, M105 and 205 followed up with 85RD will suit your needs. You could also give SIP or Powergloss a chance too. 4" and 5.5" pads will work wonders.
 
Thanks for the all the insight everyone. I ended up ordering some optimum compound and polish with an assortment of pads, mostly 4" but I got a few 6" ones (in order to apply sealant). I also ordered po85rd to clean it up and I'm grabbing a bottle of megs 105 locally. Now I just have to grab a machine which will also be local, shortly. Not sure if I should wait for the XP but if it comes out in May like they're saying, I should probably just wait.

A 4" PFW on a PC can do wonders.

Yup...on VW paint the only thing I would use (unless using M105 + KBM) is a 4" pad, PFW or Foam.
 
Do you have a link to the Kevin Brown method and would it be something that I should undertake off the bat or get some experience down?
