Very Nice!

What's the heat shield for? I'm not very familiar with VW's. Is there a turbo there or header? Or is it blocking the heat from the engine to the air duct?

Nope no turbo * I wish* .. the air box is there behind the shield and basically more for looks .. once I painted the engine covers that black area kind of stood out .. The shield is spaced from the airbox and does seperate it from the head on that side so there might be a benifit. The red ducting on the left side is the cold air intake from the grill area .. VW actually has a very efficient cold air intake.

I love your attention to detail, nice job and sweet looking engine. :up

Curious, do you show your car at Waterfest or other VW events or do you detail your engine for your own pleasure.

I live over in south central British Columbia Canada pretty well directly north of Spokane Washington so waterfest is a looooong way away but I do show it at shows that are within 5 hours driving time. Last major one I did was the Radium Hot springs/ Invermere show and it was 500+ cars.

There is so few VW in the area that VW events don't happen round here. Wish they did. At a show in Washington state I got an honorable mention for the paint finish ( there was no class for it but with the help from the people here etc I had it looking fine ) and when the judges were doing thier rounds they questioned me extensively on it. And I had a group of 15 or so from a large Montana club come over and ask the proceedures I used.

This is what start they were talking about.

TY very much for your compliment.

Doh, should have looked at your location before making that Waterfest comment.:o

The VW/Audi guys in SoCal are very active, actually I would venture to guess along with the Porsche guys they're always at one show or another. If it wasn't for them I doubt half of the MB owners would ever attend a GTG.....but now I'm getting off topic.

That reflection shot is amazing, it takes talent, hard work and the right products to achieve results like that on black paint.:xyxthumbs

I prefer the last generation bodystyle (R129) SL over the current one. Truly a timeless design and awesome build quality. Tell your brother in law to hold on to that car, it's destined to become a classic especiall if well cared for.

Way off topic.....A good portion of the earlier (1991) SL components were used to build my car actually including the engine, transmission, brakes and other chassis components. Amazing how often I see part numbers that reference an SL part on my car.
