Menzera Power Gloss Vs 1500 Grit Wet Sanding Marks on 99 Cobra

Hey guys! It's been a while but I've finally started on my project. I just had a question about my results after using PG with my PC. Long story short this 1999 Cobra was color sanded some time ago up to 1500 grit and never finished. It's been garaged and sitting waiting for treatment. I've finally gotten everything I need (killer fluorescents & a PC) so I've decided to start. Here's what I've done so far:

pro_detail_1.jpg

Wash with Mequiars NXT Car Wash

Claybar & Prep Surface

Menzera PG @ 4.5 (spread), 5 to work via PC

Un-treated side (ie. before):

Treated side (ie. after):

My concern are the imperfections remaining on the surface. Am I just being to picky or is there more I can do? something I can do differently? maybe something I'm just not doing enough? The imperfections are either much smaller reduced scratches or they almost look like bits of hard water outlines..

Anyhow it's not all bad I mean this is only after PG.. It was just my understanding this was the kind of end all be all product I could count on.. this is a photo 1ft. above the surface slightly angled down:

So like I said it looks much better, but I thought I could achieve results similar to those killer macro shots I see so often here at Autopia. :sosad

As for my total plan of attack: PG, IP, FPII, RMG, then Souveran by hand.. To much? just right? I may not need the RMG based on results after the FPII.. but a buddy of mine does IP, FPII, RMG, then a hand carbunba on black Fords and the finish is killer!

i dont think the PG works well with a pc but thats my opinion. Alot of the times going to a heavier compound isnt what you need. I can cause micro marring due to the lack of heat induced by the pc. A while ago my friend did his black z28 with PG with a megs polishing pad and the finish looked cloudy cause there was micro marring all over the car. We went over it with DACP and it cleaned it up very nicely. Case in point try to use a polish that will get the job done, most of the time you wont need to use an aggressive polish. You need to use the prodcut pad combo and figure it out that way. Over all it looks great if the finish isnt up to your par try using the IP or FP but with a mild polishing pad. Like the CMA white pad or edge blue finishing pad. Good luck and the car looks nice.

You might be at the limit of what a PC can do there. What pad did you use?

I'm using a yellow cutting pad.. I think you're right about this being the limit of the PC.

I tried IP over an area first before I decided to actually use the PG. This car needed the PG the results are nice but the marco shots won't win any awards. Thanks for the kind words.

PG should be applied via rotary, not PC.

I've followed the PG threads for a while now and many people (autopia pros included) have had fine results with PG and a PC. Maybe the PC isn't enough to totally repair my surface.. but it seems to be fixing it.

Alright guys well I guess I'll get back on it and post some results before I apply the RMG and souveran. :woot: thanks!

use something ike Ip and adjust your pads accordingly working little sections at a time. its time consuming figuring out what works but after than you have the award winning shots.

Thanks again for the quick help guys, everything turned out fine. :woot:

I decided to tape the trunk off from the rest of the car. I applied a few more of my steps to see what result I would be able to achieve. This is a little teaser before I post my final shots later this afternoon. Remember the before and the after shot from above? Well I went one better:

So thanks again!

I was surprised to learn that you use PG with PC. It's very tough job for PC to break down PG and I know that it will make the paint cloudy with product. (not sure if it happens with you but it happened to me when I first tried this step) I later use PG and rotary and it turned out fine. Still, I used glass cleaner to wipe the area again just to make sure there's no residue of product left on the panel.

But recent pics from you look excellent BTW.

Personally, I would've gone higher than 1500 grit, but it looks like it worked at great for you, so good job.

Nice way to keep the snake shining. Is that a reflection off your paint? Thats pretty shiny if it is.

Thanks, yeah it is.. and thanks again.. nice to see another stang on autopia, lets see some picstures! :woot:

You're not the first to tell me that either.. back when I was looking into products and procedures some users here had great results.. it seems I turned out lucky although as others have not.. There's no secret just yellow cutting pad, PC on 4.5 then 5, and some time.. If I had the experience to go rotary or cylo I would have but I'm not there yet.. I just got my own PC, so I'll work with this for a bit longer. and thanks.

It's funny you say that, we were.. but it started to rain we just didn't have the time. Our shop is very dusty during storms and the car was covered in filth.. I was to lazy to ever prep it again for another treatment and the paint guys never got around to bothering me to finish. I was a bit worried but all turned out pretty good.. the paint is the best ford black I've come accross in a long time. thanks.

Ok so everything is coming along well then I get to the hood. I treated it with PG via PC @ 5 & 6 to work.. results are on par with what I saw over the rest of the car after just using the PG. My only concern is that I have polished water spots and I can't seem to remove them:

hood_waterspots.jpg

any ideas on what I could possibly do to remove these deposits that the PG/PC can't? I really don't like polished hard water spots. :hairpull

The car is coming along so well, anyone who has seen my old posts will really be surprised how well it came along. I cannot thank everyone in this community enough. I just wish it wasn't overcast so I could take some beautiful daytime photos. My T10 fluorescents just aren't the same as natural Florida sunlight. :bow

Those spots are going to be tough, i would look into a 4" SFX pad from Autopia.

It also appears that you still have some tracer sanding marks.

If it were my car i would find a shop around you that can run a rotary. I would get some better pics, post them here, and ask some people with rotary experince what should be done.

Then goto the shop and tell them that is what you want.

Most shops dont burn paint, they just dont do enough steps, thats why they always leave holograms.

I would rather polish out holograms with a PC, then try to get the tracer wetsanding marks and etched waterspots out.

At this point I've done what I can with a PC.. the finish is great but I want concours baby! I called the bodyshop we work with to ask if their detailer could spare a few minutes of his day. They gave me the number to the guy who they send to our shop... I'm just waiting for a call back..

As for what he needs to do I would imagine all he need is my yellow cutting pad, my Menzerna Power Gloss, aa half hour out of hia day, and his rotary..?

well I called around and everyone knew someone else who was "high risk" as they called it.. still waiting on a call from our guy.. long story short from what I'm told "the best" guy in Boca's wife (who is also a detailer) said over the phone that it's acid rain and needs to be sanded further and then hit with high speed. :down So anyhow I'm going to call in tomorrow and meet up with her husband "the best in Boca" and have him look over it. So if I can't find anyone today with some spare time in my area then I guess I'll be going to him tomorrow. :waxing:

The sun peeked out for a minute so I pulled the car out to snap some shots.. As you can see SUN > ME.. :sign

outside_1.jpg

It looks good, but lets see how it does after I get a polishing pad FPII, RMG, and some Souveran on it! :spot

well I took care of everything without any help.. just me my PC, some PG, and a little IP. No one called me back yesterday, and the guy I spoke with this morning "the best" said come by around 4PM.. I waited called a bit after 4 and caught his wife on the phone.. :hairpull long story short "they're not for me" and I had to take matters into my own hands.

hood_afterPGIP.jpg

As you can see no more BS in the hood.. It took some time and a few passes but cleaned up very well. I'm finally finished! :grinno:

I'll put up some outside daytime shots tomorrow in a new thread. :woohoo:
