meguirs pads suck

This is only the third car i have done and the pad does not stick at all. It flew off while i was doing the car and i almost hit the car with the backing pad. Has anyone else had this problem?

very often. It will happen if you get the back of the pad wet. My pads were fine till someone washed them wrong and got the back all wet. That was it for them sticking. I've been able to get them to last long enough just by spraying off the front of the pad and not squeezing the water out. I just try to shake most of it out and thin spin the rest out on the PC set to 3. that seems to work. Right now the pad sticks almost too well. Its pulling teh velcro part off my backing plate.

You using a Meguiar's backing plate, Anthony? I have experiencing what Paco and a few others have posted...my backing let's the pad slip a bit, so it becomes off center after a while. Doesn't fly off, but doesn't stay put. And my pad was totally dry when I had this problem.

I'm using a different backing plate. I don't know what kind it is. Its black though. I'll have to get a pic of it. I've already pulled the velcro pad off the plate once and had to glue it back on. Its holding well now. Its the velcro on the polishing pads itself that seem to be crapping out on people the most.

Strange... I have a Lake Country backup pad on my rotary and a Megs on my PC, neither gave me any problem so far with Megs foam pads :nixweiss

It's probably the black contour backing plate from Coastal Tools. I gotta get me one of those. I saw it one of Brad B.'s pics. Everyone says that backing plate has lots of stick. The other one Paco recommended is 3M's Hook-It.

If you have the Megiar's backing plate, it might be both. But if you have 3M or Coastal Tools backing plate, it's probably a wet pad like Jgnr said.

Yeah I had the same problem and told Jngrbrd bout it - he then had the same problem.

Prolly the little Gremlins stowed away in my truck..

Anyways, Mike Phillips is well aware of it and it's being taken care of.

When .. I dunno - but they know bout it.

I have the Coastal Porter Cable Velcro Backing Plate and 4 different Lake Country Mfg pads. I have used them for about 2 months and maybe on 10 different occasions. No problems so far.

I have the Meg's backing plate, and have had the same Meguiar's pads for several years. I wash them after every use and have never had a problem with them not sticking to the plate. Odd... :nixweiss

My backing plate is the Meguiar's one and I use the Meguiar's pads.

I find the backing plate seems just a tad small which, I think, causes some flutter (or flapping) of the outside edge of the pad at the highest PC speed.

My cutting pad's velcro backing became detatched in the centre (stayed attached on the outside though) and I found that when used at high speed for any length of time this caused it to get quite hot.

I haven't had any problems with velcro adhesion, although, after washing I have found that they don't stick like they did when new. Also, I have found that after washing the pads the velcro backing shrank just slightly (washed by hand and air dried) giving the pad a slight dome shape.

Didn't Mike say that they were working on a number of changes to their pads? As I recal he said they were changing the velcro backing and the glue that held them to the pad. He also made reference to other changes, does anyone have any hint as to what these might be and when these "new and improved" pads will be available?

Yes, mine have done that too. It is most noticeable on the polishing pads. Maybe the cutting pad is too hard to dome, and the finishing pad to soft to notice. It doesn't seem to affect how the pad works, and seems to make it a little easier to move over the surface (probably because it tapers away from the surface). However, it was certainly unexpected.

Your right, this is most prominent on the yellow polishing pads.

When mine domed the polishing pad(actually two of them) where destroyed with the very next use. The dome caused the backing plate (meguiars) to come into contact with the pad, basically eating it up. The pad was ruined as it leaves tiny pieces of foam everywhere. My finishing pad and cutting pad were both thrown away because the velcro piece fell off after two washings. I washed all of them the same, in the sink, by hand with dawn, airdry.

So I agree meguiar's pads SUCK!!!

Funny, I had a thread a couple of weeks ago showing how my Lake Country foam pads behaved exactly like that, tho my supplier changed them for new ones while the Megs pads keep on day after day, wash after wash.

They work fine you must be doing something wrong. The velcro must be dirty or damaged from the washing machine. All 10 of My Pad stick perfect some are even 2+ yr's old. Try cleaning the back of them.

Ummm...you might want to reread some of the posts. All (ok, most) of the users reporting problems, including Jngrbrdman, are handwashing them....
