How much do backing plates generally run? Are they the same thing just different names basically?

I've seen them from $13.00 - $20.00, thats for the 5 inch one. Then there's those nice 3m brand ones that run over $50.00. I have the Lake Country and a cheaper SM Arnold backing plate, the SM one seems to be firmer than the LC. I honestly dont see any difference between the 2 of them when used with the PC.
