Can this product be removed and applied by hand??

Any tips, never used anything like it before

Cheers

You can do it by hand, its just going to be a ton of work. To be truely effective you are going to want to use a machine. Swirls are removed by cutting down the clear coat a little. You'd have to have arms like an ox to be as effective by hand as a machine. No harm in trying though. Try it on a fender and see if you are having an impact on the swirls and then go from there.

Jngrbrdman is correct.

However, the good news is that if you are going to do it by hand, #9 is just about the easiest to work with. Try it on a small panel and see if you are satisfied with the results and effort required.

This is the most effective swirl remover I have used. I have both tried with machine and by hand and hand is more effective. #9 is just a polish with a non abrasive cleaner. Its not real harsh. I have had excellent results with it on my black car. Follow up with #26 (paste form) and you will be stunned.

Say that again? I must be mixed up about what #9 has in it and how it is used. It is abrasive and should have some solvents too...or so I thought. How did you get better results by hand? Curious. Hand application vs. a PC with yellow pad. There is no comparison to me.

If we believed the Meguiar's marketing line, everything would be "non-abrasive". :p

I haven't even used a machine and I have trouble believing it's better by hand too.

Cheers guys. Will try some by hand. The car has no swirls in it, but has never been paint cleaned, in another thread i have been recommeded to clay, paint clean and use some # 9 before polishing and waxing.

Cheers

I thought the #9 was much less abrasive than SMR, both by machine. I switched to the SMR because the #9 seemed to be not really doing much at all beyond putting down oils and fillers.

I had equal results by hand and found the SMR to be acceptable but it was a lot of work per panel. The #9 by hand reminded me more of #7 and IHG only with a slightly lighter and creamier consistency.

Justin, I have tried both by hand and by machine. It seems that by machine I put some swirls in the paint! And wasn't pressing hard. By hand, it removed all the swirls.

Then again this is a black car. I have used this process on light colored vehicles with great results with the machine.

Wow. That is quite amazing, but whatever works! I was able to remove swirls with #9, but not by hand.

I read on this forum that Meguiars scratch x is less abrasive than smr 9 verison 2 and of course 9.2 is less abrasive than FCRC. I have all these products and have used them. If you rub the product between your fingers it certainly feels that the above is correct. My point is that since Meguiars Scratch X is less abrasive therefore it is easier to break down by hand. I have had some success using scratch X to remove light swirls and some scratches. To be effective I had to purchase a PC to get the results I wanted with anything stronger than scratch x. Now I have seen some beautiful pictures by Scottwax when he only polished by hand but then Scottwax is a pro.

Are you sure about Scratch-X being less abrasive than #9? I think carguy once posted an "unofficial ranking" and #9 and Swirl-Free ranked as the two least abrasive polishes. According to Scottwax, SFP is similar in abrasiveness to Pinnacle's and P21S' paint cleansers.

No I am not sure. I am just going by an old post and the feel of the product. To be sure contact meguiars and ask. When feeling scratch x and the smr they feel very close but I think the scratch x feels less abrasive. In any event I have only been able to use scratch x successfully by hand. Maybe there is more to it than the abrasiveness of the product such as cleaners. That might be another good question for Meguiars. Of course Meguiars sometimes says thing in a marketing context.

good luck
