Meguiars 7 Show Car Glaze before Klasse?

Does their #7 Show Car Glaze contain any oils and chemicals etc. that "fill in" swirls? I'm asking because I've heard that Imperial Hand Glaze contains oils that will reduce the ability of synthetics to bond to the paint. Basically my question is this. Since you can't use IHG as surface prep before Klasse, can you use SCG?



If not, what is a good surface prep/polish that doesn't contain any of these oils? I know Klasse claims that AIO contains cleaners and whatnot, but I don't believe that they can be nearly as effective as a good polish.

Yes #7 does have fillers and oils in it, just like IHG. You can use any polish like #7 before Klasse AIO, because AIO has cleaners in it that will remove the olis and fillers from a polish like #7. You can than layer SG on the AIO, and it will band properly. Just to be safe you can always Dawn wash the finish after polishing to remove any oil from the polish before using Klasse.
 
SG will not bond on top of #7 and If you try #7 on top it will remove the SG. You must have a clean filler free surface for most polymers to bond.



Do you want to use a polish to remove imperfections or to enhance the shine?
 
Ok, so I can use the SCG just as long as I use Dawn before applying the AIO?



This is sort of a theoretical question, as I'm planning to do this during the winter to keep the paint nice. As of now I've only been doing AIO, SG, and P21S (I've had the car for 2 months), but I figure that some road salt and whatnot is bound to creep in during the winter and I'd like to keep the finish nice.



FWIW, here is what I normally do on the paint when detailing.



Wash w/ dawn

Klasse AIO

Klasse SG

P21S topper



So you're saying that the following would also work?



Wash w/ dawn

7 SCG or 3m IHG

Wash w/ dawn

Klasse AIO

Klasse SG

P21S topper

Dawn washing before AIO is not a must. AIO is a cleaner-polish, that will remove any polish or oils from a polish. If you Dwan wash you can skip AIO and lay on the SG without using AIO first, if you like. I always use AIO+SG, i think Klasse works best that way.



BTW. Is the finish smooth? if not you may need to clay the finish.

So, if I use anything before my original method, it should be clay? I've never used a claybar before, so I'm a bit wary about it, but the car is 2 months old and I've Klassed it once (right when I got it) and thrown an extra coat of P21 on there once, so the paint is pretty damn smooth :D



btw, I figured I'd have a tough time finding things about surface prep before Klasse, so I didn't search. I'll keep it in mind in the future though. :xyxthumbs
 
Sounds like you don't need to use clay, like rightlane said your normal method will work fine.



Some day you will need too use caly on your vehicle to remove surface contamination. An easy way to test for surface contamination on your vehicles finish. First wash the surface, than put your hand in a plastick ziplock bag and glide it and over the surface of your vehicle. If you feel any bumps you'll need to use some clay to remove them.

One thing you'll find with many products is that they are similar and should be treated similarly. Like #7 and IHG, and 3M SMR and #9. Which one you like/use is personal preference. If you want to polish the car at all, I would not bother with a glaze because even a swirl remover is so darn mild (at least by hand).



Scenario 1: Car has some minor swirls or imperfections you want to polish out. I'd use a swirl remover because glaze has very very little cutting power. It's like makeup.



Scenario 2: Car is almost perfect and you just want to polish to perfect it even more or just for the heck of it. In this case just skip polishing and go straight to AIO.
 
Yeah, a member of this board ended up helping me out on the bimmer forum we both frequent. I was confused with the whole Glaze/Polish thing, and Meguiar's marketing was only making me more confused. :sosad



So yeah... I'll pick up some 3M SMR (because I don't feel like buying Megs after I bought their Show Car Glaze/polish/glaze/polish :rolleyes: )
