Meguiars #16 Question

due to VOC (volatile organic compound) issues. It's still sold in Europe, but I've been able to find a few tins here and there... just old stock.

It's a good, durable wax to say the least, a bit of a headache to work with if you apply too much, but definitely a good go-to wax for the winter.

Just my $0.02 worth....

I'm sure there's plenty of others who will chime in.

You may have some luck by finding it laying around in some marine supply store, but for the most part #16 is history. I have 2 cans myself, and I expect those to last me a very LONG time.

I consider #16 to be an "old school" wax. No special smell, and it comes in a tin where you have to open it with a screwdriver. Application is very easy, you need not apply too much. As long as you put a thin coat, it's easy to buff off. If you put a thick coat, you might need some extra elbow crease, but in the end it comes off and you can always resort to a QD to wipe down any remaining residue.

Shine is beautiful, almost similar to S100. Don't know about durability from my own experience as I've only had it applied for a day, but judging by the opinions of other Autopians, this is a pretty tough wax.

Overall, when it was still around, it presented a great value. And you get a lot of product! I have a feeling just one can will last me almost 5 years minimum!

Just another great product from Meguiar's. :bounce

Yeah, unfortunately it was discontinued. I still have 1 full tin and one that's about half-full, so I'm good for a long time yet. It smells like crayons, and lasts a long time for a wax.

Basically what the other guys said. I myself have two tins, one unopened and one about 95% full. One color it really seems to stand out on is white.

meg's #16 is my go-to wax when someone asks for something durable. right now im running an experiment on my mom's VW beetle. I did a quick AIO/#16 combo thanksgiving weekend and even now, in february, it still beads nicely. washed weekly, garaged at night, outside during the day.

looks good on beige too :D

I bought enough for a lifetime... 10 cans! I can probably hand 8 of these down to my grandchildren!

You beat me. I have 4 cans and love it. Someone said it is an old fashioned wax which is true but still an oldie but goodie.

... No special smell..

Aw, come on! It smells like Crayons; IMO it's one *very* special smelling wax :D

But yeah, what they said. It's a very good all-around wax. Sorta "heavy", so it can do a little hiding of imperfections. Somewhat "self-cleaning" in the rain.

I have one can from the early-mid '90s that I've *almost* used up and another 3 cans on the shelf....and a case of a dozen after that (you might say I don't want to run out :o ).

One of the big things about #16 is how little you need. The can I'm finishing would've been empty by most people's standards long ago- just a little bit of wax left around the edge of the bottom of the can. But I've done the A8 many times since I first thought "it's about empty", and figure I have at least three more applications left. I'm so intrigued by how many coats I can get out of this infinitesimal amount of wax that I'm adding a coat after almost every wash- it just amazes me how I hardly need any to do a full size car. When I finally open the next can I'll probably put it on goofy-thick just to be contrary :chuckle:

#16 is absolutely amazing as far as I'm concerned. A double (spit shined) coat got me through all of last years Michigan winter (nov-april). It really does self clean in the rain. On my car, anything above the bumpers is completely clean after it rains, just the bumpers and lower parts of the doors stay dirty. Amazing stuff. My 3 unopened and 1 opened can ought to last me for a loooooong time.

PS, the crayon smell is probably the best part about it. Come on, whatelse can you get that smells like crayons?

S100 and P21S.

And a 64-pack from Crayola, of course. :D

I never really thought s100 and p21s smelled nearly as strongly of crayons as 16 did, but hey, thats just me. Now, where the heck is my 64 pack of crayons.......

I've never used anything else that stay slick for a long time. Even after a few months the slickness is still there. It may not be as slick as the first day but it's not like other wax that loses their slickness after a few washes. I really don't care for the looks on this wax though, I still think that s100 looks better. But it's the most durable wax i've used.

Well, it is a good, no. great, wax. I'm sorry to see it go. (I'm good :LOLOL .)

IMHO, the petroleum-based carrier (read non-VOC Compliant) will not allow for 'layering', as it is literally self cleaning.

I believe Sealants can be layered, but not waxes.

Just me.

Well, I never thought so either ;)

Jimmy Buffit- I think you know me well enought to know I do *NOT* want to get the whole "layering waxes" :argue going, but try doing different panels with different numbers of applications sometime (hint: and try the spit-shining thing) and then keep an eye on them. I'm always in favor of people proving/disproving things for themselves, and hey, if somebody gets differing results (for all I know maybe you've already tried this!) that's cool with me too :D

#16 is an absolutely phenomenal wax if used correctly, on everything from show cars to daily drivers. If you put it on too thick, you'll hate it. If you do it correctly, its up there with any other wax.
