i used a gallon of #85 last summer, as my GOTO compound on severe paint correction.

i was extremely impressed how it finishes down, and little dusting etc....could go straight to #80.

i use a wheel with foam pads....and just recently was alerted to the fact that #85 was designed for wool - and #84 for foam ??

anyone have experience with #84 and how similar it is to #85.

i have to bulk order soon,, and am taking suggestions !!

maybe i should just get both !! :nixweiss

I use 85 with a foam pad every day. Very pleased with the combo.

84 seems MUCH more effective with a wool pad.

I asked Mike Phillips about the difference, and his reply was simple, "Sometimes one works, sometimes the other is best." Go figure.

I stock both, but use more 85...

interesting,,, guess i'll stick with what works! #85 !!

thx

Interestingly, for the Hungarian (east block) market, the 85 will be more aggressive and geared towards foam.

I'll try it, but I think I'll stick to my Optimum and Menzerna stuff.

Are you using their W7000 or a different foam?

I am using white LC VC 7.5's with the #85....and have had great results....never even had to try an orange or yellow compounding pad...

seems to last a fair while with the white...but apparently the #84 has more lubricating oils, and will keep working longer (?)

but why mess with success.

M84 does seem to work a bit longer than M85, but it's not as strong.

For the hard paints, M85 on wool cuts nicely and leaves very little in the form of polisher swirls when compared to other compunds. I've only dabbled with it on foam.

do a majority of you guys use it on the foam pad then? i've used it with the wool pad and the w8000 and it seems to work really well for the w8000 pad, just wondering what you guys input is on? i guess i will stick with what works!.

I've used quite a bit of all three: M84, M85 and M105.

M105 can really remove defects depending on how much pressure you use.

Between M84 and M85, I like M85 better. It just seems to work perfectly when combined with a wool pad.

This summer, I worked on a gel coat boat that had some serious pad scouring. M105 just didn't seem to want to cooperate with the hard paint. M84 did okay, but M85 removed the defects without any fuss.

If M105 just isn't working right, I'll use M85.

Yes, the finish M105 leaves is much better, but the holograms after M85 are pretty light. It doesn't take much to remove them.

With the exception of M105, I don't use a heavy compound with a foam pad. That being said, M105 will work great with ANY pad.
