Megs 83 as a one-step?

Meg's #83 used with an orange pad on speed 5 leaves the finish with micro swirls, a tad dull to me and dust bits all over. I hate the dusting that #83 leaves as it is another step to remove the dust bits. I used to follow #83 with #80 which is a great product for the final step but #80 also dusts up.

Now when using #83 I remove the dust and follow up with Poli-Seal. OPS removes the dullness and the micro swirls and the big plus for me is no extra dust removal step using OPS! OPS does not dust.

When using Meg's #105 I currently follow up using OPS for the same reasons stated above.

I use a white pad with OPS on speed 5 when following up #105 and #83.

If they made #105 and #83 without any dusting issues I would be so happy.

I was using 83 and 80 for a bit and thought it was OK. But I was ignorant and sort of a newbie. I started using UC and 205 and almost immediately gave the 83 and 80 away. In hindsight, I'd say both 83 and 80 especially– are, uhh, junk.

I still like #80 for certain applications, but M205 has basically replaced it for most of my mild correction. I'd rather use #80 on fresh repaints while they're curing.

I dunno, I recently did a neglected Subaru with my Flex 3401 and #83 on my old Meg's yellow polishing pads and it came out fine. Gummed up a bit when the pads got saturated and I got to some in-the-sun parts...I'll put up a picture when I get them off my camera. Perhaps I'm not as discriminating as some of you :nixweiss: , but this was for a friend-of-a-friend and I didn't want to do more than one step.

I know you didn't as for alternatives but you may want to consider Megs D151 as an AIO. D151 uses non-diminishing abrasives and I've found it removes moderate swirling and light scratches. I got it to finish down to LSP ready w/ and orange pad using the KBM (sprayed w/ water then reduced speed/pressure.) Can't comment on the longevity of the protectant as I top at the next wash.

Other than ease of use what I find appealing is the protectant because at the end of a polishing session i just want to pick up and be done, so it's there until I'm fresh and apply some other later. The price is quite nice as well when bought by the gal and when using the KBM you don't worry so much on usage when priming pads.

Setec Astronomy- I can never really tell much from internet pics, but if *you* say it turned out OK I'll take your word for it. Surprises me though, given how the paint was on my two Subies and my (quite limited) experiences with #83.

My experience with 83 and 80 left me thinking that 83 was the better of the two. I thought the follow on with 80 after 83 was negligible visually. Not sure what 80 is good for really. I also think 80 is too difficult to remove after polishing. I ended up just using 83 by itself.

83 as a one-step is fine for most DDers. Heck, I'd almost say UC is fine as a one-step, very easy removal too.

carlsson- Heh heh, I guess this is one more example of why they say "YMMV" :D I find #80 *very* easy to buff off and hardly any aggressive products leave finishes I like.

Since who knows which side of this fence somebody's experiences will fall, it's good to have people with both experiences posting about it.

Well, I may have been cleaning/waxing as long as you...but I haven't been "detailing" nearly as long...as I alluded to, I'm sure I am much less discriminating than you are. This car belonged to an old friend of Jr.'s, she said it was 6 years old, never garaged.

Hood after wash, full sun:

After #83 and NXT, #80 on headlight (trying to use up some stuff!)

I dunno, it looked ok to me...sure better than the dull it came in with:

The that's that, huh? Hey, it's not like I'd do every car like my S8 or anything ;)

I guess I kinda knee-jerk about #83 for some reason.

Heh heh, the last Subie I did for somebody was my late uncle's Outback, which I did with Griot's Machine Polishes of all things :o
