Megs 21 Qs

Was just doing some reading on megs 21 and it seems that it does a pretty good job. Right now I'm using UPP, and I really like it. However, Autogeek has 64 oz for 35 bucks. Seems like a great deal IMO.

Can anyone comment an it's durability as opposed to UPP? How about what it does for the paint, I really like the way UPP makes the metallic flake pop, can I expect similar results from #21?

Thanks in advance.

*edit* While researching the product, I read somewhere that you can't layer it. Then I read a review someone posted on this site that said they layered it. What seems to be the concensus regarding this product and layering?

There are cleaners in it but they are so mild that partial layering is possible. Very nice, balanced product, with a very unique smell (which can just as positive as negative). Hard to wash out from the pads.

I almost always top NXT Paste with it, and I am truly impressed by its look. Apply two coats, and it will be durable and gorgeous.

No. #21 is a sealant. You can top it with a carnauba as well, but its really optional.

As I wrote, I top NXT Paste with it. The reason is, that NXT is less durable and has slightly more bite. So, in this case the NXT is basically a glaze, and the #21 is the LSP. The #21 is an excellent standalone sealant. You can top it of course, if you want, but its appearance is truly nice. Wet, deep and harmonious.

It's a sealant, so yeah, #21 then wax.

It's not as slick as UPP, and not quite as wet, but still looks nice. Durability is good, better than UPP.

I'd recommend applying 2-3 layers.

Sweet, thanks for the response.

Reason I'm asking is because a couple of friends have asked me to do their cars, and UPP is freaking expensive!

I'm assuming to allow 12 hours between applying coats?

#21 is from Meg's professional line. It was designed for easy application and buffing, reasonable durability, and good looks, which is what is needed for pro detailers who have cars in and out as fast as possible. I use #21, and while i doubt that it would beat boutique waxes/sealants, it is a product that is easy to use.

It has less cleaning ability than NXT, so you can layer it over other sealants. But why layer with #21 when you can have nice carnauba? I use it as my base sealant and then layer if I feel like it. I think that looks-wise, it is like a less shiny NXT, but it lasts much longer than NXT. P21s still looks better, but it is a close match.

I've never used #21, but I can tell you that I absolutely LOVE DP's Premium Surface Shield. Currently you can get 32oz. for $15 (look at the bottom of the page), so in the end it is less expensive. I've never used UPP but from what I've heard PSS's looks and slickness are just like UPP's. It leaves a hard, wet finish with some brilliant flake pop, and its durability seems good so far. It has no cleaners and can be layered every 12 hours.

I agree, except i top with Natty's blue. Slickness runs out in about 8 weeks, but still maintains a decent glow.

I like #21 enough that I bought a 64oz and abandoned my bottle of NXT. I still have a spare unopened bottle of NXT lying around that I will not be using. :) For those who want smaller sizes, you can get the sample sized bottle or wait for the skinny on the reformulated NXT (which is said to have been released at the beginning of 2005).

I dont remember hearing about a refomulation on the NXT, do you have a link, i dont wanna browse through 100's of posts to look for it.

Here is the link. Meg's UK rep "Jill" confirmed the change, and Mike Phillips over at MOL made some enquiries and found that the new formulation was to meet VOC requirements. In addition to meeting VOC requirements, the chemists supposedly refined the formulation to improve the look of NXT. Not sure if durability has been improved.
