McLaren SLR - Jet Black

I've been away from Autopia for a long time, and I started to realize recently how much I miss the community. This is actually my first post in the click'n'brag section. I've been working on some pretty neat cars lately.

This is actually the second SLR I've worked on. The first was black with a brown/gold metallic flake. That one was a breeze compared to this one - maybe I'll post pics some other time.

This car has 700 kms on it and it was rashed to hell. I have yet to see a car with paint as soft as these SLRs. I assume it has something to do with them being hand painted (McLaren is in charge of the process I believe, since these cars are assembled in England.)

There are 500 being produced every year over a period of 7 years.

For the polishing, I ended up using some optimum products including HC, Polish, and Menzerna FPII.

I was only given 5 hours with this car (it's a long story).

Thanks for having a look!

Here's some pics.

JED YOU ARE MY HERO...is this the one in Hawkwood, specifically the Uplands?

EDIT: oohh the other one is in the corner

EDIT 2: DAYUM i need to visit your shop sometime..where is it?

Wow...after your magic touch the SLR looks 100 times better than before, first class work :2thumbs: . The place you do the detailing looks first class too. Btw what LSP did you use on the SLR ?

Pics we like but process and products we love. Don't post pics w/o process and products used. The car looks amazing!!

Compliments to the Chef!!

That is one delicious car. I hate when you are given a limited time frame to work in. You don't get a chance to exhibit your talents properly.... but all the same, excellent work. Fair play to you. :grinno:

Sweepy

Amazing car, amazing results but what a nice shop you were working in! Very impressive.

I lived in Woking, England for about 6 years. That's where the McLaren factory is, about half a mile from our house. We were seeing prototypes drive by for a long time before they were released. Beautiful cars...

WOW!!!! Excellent detail!

I notice the type of scretches that accur on soft paints are looking almost identical in nature. (like the one I've seen on new jet black bmw paints)

Thanks for the comments everyone - it's really appreciated!

I guess I didn't include enough info about the process - oops!

First of all it's not my shop, it's a luxury dealership here in Calgary. The owner calls me in from time to time to do work for him. And yes, it's probably the nicest detail bay in Canada (can't confirm this but it's nice to imagine). I bring all my own equipment and supplies.

I was off site working on another vehicle when he called and asked if I could come in that evening. I didn't even have all my pads with me (no polishing/white pads) so I had to improvise a little.

First I will quantify how soft this paint was - I scratched it while feeling it with the back of my fingers. My microfiber towels were scratching it if I used any pressure. Removing polish from this car took 3 times as long as normal because I had to use such a gentle touch.

I am indeed using a Metabo rotary as Sneek said. The last SLR I ended up just using Optimum Polish with a white pad, so I tried again using a finishing pad (no white pads.)

It brought out all the light swirls but as you can see, this car needed some serious care. I tried some Hyper Compound on my finishing pad which didn't do me much good, so I switched to a heavy cutting pad.

I ended up going over most of the car with the cutting pad and the HC at around 1800 RPM, dropping it as low as 900 for tight areas like the ridges on the hood. The micromarring and hazing were pretty severe of course, but I kept the faith. I did two passes on the hood, roof, and trunk.

I followed with a finishing pad and Optimum Polish, also around 1800 rpm. I dropped it to 1100 to do the tricky areas.

I followed with Final Polish II on my PC at speed 5, using really heavy pressure on the ridges, followed by a no pressure pass.

Afterwards I brought out the Menzerna Finishing Touch Glaze and applied with a finishing pad and my PC on speed 2.5.

I wanted to top this with Pinnacle Souveran for looks, but I went with FMJ instead, purely for protection's sake.

The vehicle was washed for me before I arrived. I didn't touch the trim or wheels, except to quickly wipe off some water spots left on them. I was just called in for the paint.

Thanks again for looking!

I'm going to guess thats the new Bently dealership? The ZR detail garage isn't even 1/2 as nice.
