Marring ... old micro fibres?

Hi,

well I was detailing my car the other day, and I noticed that whenever I used one of any of my micro fibre cloths that they marred the car whilst removing the product. I also found my waffle weave cloths doing the same, all of these cloths are about 1 year old now, so my question is ... is the age of the cloths causing the marring .... or am I doing something I shouldn't with the PC and its pads (also about 12 - 18 months old) ... perhaps working the product too much, or not enough maybe?

Thanks for any help.

I've had plush-style MFs wear down but once that happens I never use them for anything where that could cause problems. You could try CD-testing them and see if that tells you anything. I quit using my MFs on delicate surfaces as soon as they lose a little plushness, figuring better safe than sorry.

My WWs haven't degraded. They were getting a bit stiff but repeated washes (no detergent, hot water) followed by a vinegar rinse softened them back up. Subsequent washes with "MF detergent" (and again, a vinegar rinse) have kept them that way.

If there's any chance that your MFs are marring the paint I'd just relegate those to grunge-duty and use (soft) new ones on the paint.

I would take his advice, detailed a blak BMW 3 series yesterday and used a grunge coscto MF to remove some metal polish from the window trim . . . the MF barely touched the paint and it caused some marring, had to re-polish the area. Rediculous . . . :nixweiss
