Hi does anyone here use a makita bo6040 ?

i was wonder if it was possible to change the backing plate to something smaller 5.5" eg , any one did this before or know what thread the backing plate uses ?

While I'm pretty sure at least a couple of members here use the BO6040, they evidently haven't seen your post.
Auto Geek carries a replacement backing plate for the unit, but it appears to be 6".
You can switch to the Edge system with an adapter. Edge makes pads in several sizes including 4", 6", and 8".
It reads to me like the thread size is 5/8-11. :dunno:

thanx CharlesW,

I had a look at the edge system .. problem is .. in South Africa .. edge pads are not available ...:-( ,
I'm looking to get a 5" backing plate to use some 5" LC pads.

Auto Geek carries the Meguiar's 5" Velcro backing plate for a rotary and it has a 5/8" diameter shaft.
It might work on your unit.

An e-mail might get you some more information. I don't think you will have much luck with their 800 number. :)

I'm pretty sure you can't just screw a stock backing plate onto a Makita BO6040. If I remember a conversation I had with Aaron from Edge correctly, the factory backplate has some kind of intrinsic gearing on it to interface with the driving mechanism.

You could be right, but could you be thinking of the Flex dual mode unit?
I'm pretty sure it does have some gear built into it, but I didn't think that was the case with the BO6040.

It was a couple of years ago when I had the discussion with Aaron. We were discussing him making an Edge fitting for my Bosch da, and the topic of that Makita BO6040 came up.
He was talking about the Bosch and the Makita back plates being proprietary, and told me it's just not a "screw-in" type of deal on those two makes/models because of the backplates.
