M3 + 996

Today I detailed a 996 porsche and washed an m3 for a good customer of mine. I believe I posted the m3 a few weeks ago, so I just included 1 pic. I dont think I have posted the porsche yet. The m3 will need a full detail in a month or two as it has been almost 6 months since I last polished it.





Process for the porsche



exterior:

wash

clay

polish with opti polish on orange cutting pad with pc (finished down lsp ready)

seal with four star upp

meg's metal polish and AIO on exhaust

back to black on trim pieces

Wheels sealed with fx-100



interior:

vacuum

pb' natural look

lexol leather cleaner and conditioner

Process:

Wash with zaino carwash and some watered down fk 425 I needed to dump out

Spray 425 on while drying to avoid streaks and waterspots

vacuum interior

lexol condtioner on seats

I'm sorry, but I need to go to Porsche school. They are one of my all time favorite cars, but I don't know enough about them. How do you know what 9xx a Porsche is? I thought that style car was always referred to as a 911? I went to the Porsche website and I couldn't find anything that advertised a 996. It was all 911's. What's the difference? I mean I understand the differences between the Carrera, Carrera S, Carrera 4, Carrera 4S, and Turbo, but what's up with the different numbers?

996 was the model deignation for the 911's from 99-04 I believe. 05 on is referred to as the 997. 199X to 1998 I believe was the 993. THe years I provided are just guesses so dont hold it for fact.



BTW, the car I did can be referred to as a 996 C2. That is, a 1999 carrera 2wd.

Full detail was done about 5 months ago. Wash, clay, spot polishing, and nattys blue wax was done 2 weeks ago. The nattys blue was holding up awesome so far, but what else would you expect after 2 weeks?

Technically speaking, there hasn't been a Porsche 911 since 1984 - Porsche started calling the car the Carrera that year. The original 911 chassis ran from 1963-1989, with engines from 2.0L to 3.2L. The first car with a different internal type number (the number Porsche uses for designs prior to production) was the 1990 model with the 3.6L engine, known to Porschephiles as the 964. Then, as stated above, came the 993 with the last air-cooled engine, the 996 with the first water-coolend one, and the current 997.



Because the cars look basically the same, most people just go with 911 and leave it at that. There's a funny bit in the Top Gear review where Jeremy Clarkson starts out discussing the new Porsche 911's features, and then realizes he's driving the previous model when he passes the new one in the parking lot. once you get the hang of it, you can pinpoint them easily. The 996 pictured above is a base model Carrera, made between 1999 and 2001 (the headlights changed slightly - for the better - with the 2002 model year).

I'm not jumping on any bandwagon, which one do I have sitting in my garage :woohoo:
 
Great work, that Porsche looks awesome! Love those M3's too. Tell your customer I hat (OK envy really) him for what he has in his garage. Post some pics of the M3 after you detail it.
 
Okay, I got it now. Thanks for clearing that up for me guys. I was under the impression that the 99x number was a specific model, and not a specific "run" of bodystyle for a particular period of time.



So, if I understand this correctly, the 99x number is the same as a referring to say a Cx Corvette, or Exx BMW.

You can also tell the 996 by the flatter "pancake" stye headlights while the 997 is a bit more retro stylish with 993 style vertical lights.
