lower priced random orbital

Hey all,

I just picked up some Z-PC and want to use a random orbital to apply it to my black car, but I don't want to drop the money for a PC right now. I only polish once every 2 years and topcoat once every 3-4 months. Besides, my wife would freak if I bought a $130 polisher :) At any rate, I've come across what looks like a decent polisher at harbor freight:

It looks like a reasonable machine for a low cost. Is there anything that looks bad about this machine or is there another lower cost machine (up to $60) that I should look at?

Thanks guys,

Russell

That is the exact machine I have. It is a very good machine but probably not for you. The machine above will ruin you paint if placed in the wrong hands. If you dropped the funds for a PC, I don't think you would regret it. It is probably one of the most versatile and useful tool in the detailing arsenal. It can remove swirls and apply LSPs. For someone that takes care of their car, this would be all they need IMO.

Yeah, justify the PC to your wife by telling her that she could polish her furniture with it :). Your best bet is to look for a used PC, you could probably pick one up for under 75 and theyre built to last.

Thanks for the replies guys!

I don't know why, but for some reason I was thinking that was a random orbit ???? My mind must be going :)

Where might one pick up a used PC?

Russell

I would just tell her to buzz off, but that might land you on the couch for a few nights. :bawling:

Why don't you tell your wife that you are going to detail someone elses car for $ in order to cover the cost of the machine? One detail will more than cover the cost of the machine, pads, and backing plate. :nixweiss

You could look for a used one on ebay.

A new PC runs $100 to $110 at Lowe's( Of course you do have to likely shop online for the plates though) Give the wife grief if she plans to spend similarly on shoes or hand bags ;)

Hah!

You guys are killing me :) I think I will just pick up the 7336SP at Lowes.

It looks like it comes with a polishing pad, but will that be reasonable to use on my vehicle? I need to get something today as my daily driver is in the garage and I'm borrowing a vehicle until I get the polishing/waxing done.

It isn't bad, but I would see if a local paint/autobody supplier could hook you up with a couple Meguiar's W-8006 pads and a 3M hookit backing plate. :bounce

Shiny,

Thanks for the tip. I'll call around and see what I can find. I've seen Meguiars pads in my local Oreilly so I'll swing by there to see what they've got. I've read here not to use the Meguiars backing plate though, so I'll stay away from it and try to find the 3M.

Hmm, my meguiar's BP has outlasted all of the brands that I have tried. I highly recommend it...

You're one of VERY few. I actually bought my PC from Meguiar's (mainly because it has lifetime warranty for repair or replacement instead of a 2-year one) and they've replaced my W-DA64 3 times. After that I decided to give up on it. With the 3M, there are some times you have to fight it to get the pad off the plate; which I'd rather have than it flying off mid-pannel!

:woohoo:

Shiny,

That's what I had read on a number of occassions here.

Any chance you happen to see my earlier question? I can't find the detailing 101 for using a PC. Any idea where I might find a how-to?

Thanks,

Russell

NM, I found the article ;)

Hmm.... I guess I would see what comes up on a search; but in the meantime I can link you to the video I did which more or less demonstrates not only how safe a PC is to use, but you can get a basic idea of good technique from it as well:

It's a big file (8.91 MB) but probably worth it if you're interested.

Thanks for the video :)

I did finally find the link on the autopia store.

I'll take a look at the video and read the tutorial and then it's off to the races!

Nick,

Thanks,

I finally found it yesterday :) I did alright last night, but it's going to take a lot longer than I expected and there are a lot of panels on my car that I have to do by hand. Looks like a long Saturday ahead for me :)
