Hey everyone!!!!Hope every one had a good holiday!!!!

My question for everyone is what does every one recommend for removing rust from chrome.My dad has a 71 super beetle VW that has been sitting for about two years in a garage.Although garage kept there is still a noticable amount of rust on his rims.I have used never dull and was impreesed with the results but I am looking for someting to achieve better results.Was about to order the Wenol but I thought it best to consult the expert panel here @ Autopia.

some stainless stel brushes....some very fine stell wool....naval jelly is less work and like a chemical product that kinda eats it away...someone posted about it in the past...it was either Prinz...or Waxman...i cant remeber...do a search....HTH...
 
With old chrome wheels it will take some work to bring them back, if it can be done. So feel free to try a few different things. You can buy products that remove rust (can't think of a specific product but I've seen some at places like Bed, Bath, and Beyond). The steel wool idea is good. Use it with a chrome cleaner or aluminum polish or stuff like Wenol or Happich Simichrome, which I just saw at Restoration Hardware.



It will be a challenge to bring them back fully. Chrome plating needs protection and without a constant coat of wax they will oxidize. Now that the damage is done the only true way to bring them back is to rechrome them. I'm sure that's not feasible so that's why I suggest experimenting. Most anything you try will be fine. What's the worst that can happen?:D
 
Are your chrome rims clearcoated, if they're rusting you can see the clear come off.



When you first got them, you didn't shine them up with some polish? Now because they're rusting you need the same polish, just more of it! :) you might want to use a stronger rubbing compound and work your way down to the polish though.
 
If the chrome wheel has rusted more than likely some of the chrome coating has crapped out. You will be able to remove the rust but the wheel will not look correct when done. It will look better but not perfect.



Repairs procedures would depend on how big the rust spots are.
 
Thanks for everyones input.I just picked up some extra fine steel wool and I ordered some Wenol last night.So everything should come together just in time for the weekend.LET THE RUBBING EXPERIMENT BEGIN. Thanks JB

Years ago when my family had a Cadillac Seville with wire rims, we would always :mad: because we saw rust on them by spring.

A few times of scrubbing them with steel wool made me wish there was an easier way to get rid of the rust without damaging the rim. Well, someone told me about naval jelly. Naval jelly eats the rust and will not damage the chrome plating on the rim at all.



When I applied it, I was :D. No more rust.



You can get it at Home Depot, Menard's, or any hardware/home improvement store.

I've done this vehicle before. She brings it back to me every year. Not too bad considering it is a one-a-year detail.

178,000 miles and the engine has NEVER been cleaned. She never wanted to "spend the money". I convinced her it would run better!:rofl:

Complete interior detail, wash, "wax", engine bay cleaning. No polishing.

PROCESS:

  • Washed with Meg's Gold Class Car Wash - 2-bucket-method.
  • Dried with leaf blower/BB drying towel
  • Cleaned engine with Purple Power, long-handle paint brush, rinse, repeat, dry with leaf blower, dressed with CD2
  • Vac'd interior
  • Cleaned carpet with Purple Power/Carpet Brush, rinsed with water, dried with cotton towel/fans
  • Cleaned door jambs with Purple Power and paint brush, rinsed with water
  • Cleaned leather seats with Zaino leather cleaner/dressed with "Z-26" (that's Z16+Z10!):biggrin:
  • One coat of BFWD by PC/black foam pad
  • One coat of Z8
  • Done.... (4.5 hours on interior, 2.5 on exterior)

You certainly earned your maney on that one. What a mess. That engine was rather scary, and the rest of the interior, was well:scared::scared::scared::scared:.

Wait a minute. Somebody pinch me. Did I see that Bill Luster washed a car with something other then ONR;) Just kidding Bill.

I hope that lady tipped you well man, geeez, does that lady live at the bottom of a long dirt road ?....could of grown taters and carrots under the hood....cant imagine the air filter or the oil....:(
A fabulous transformation on that totally roached Nav ! I bet her teeth fell out when she picked it up ! :biggrin:
