Lexan Headlamp Lenses

BIG JOHN

New member
Just took delivery of my wife's new Saab 9,5 Estate (Sportwagon to the North Americans) - I did the Z thing, stripped off the dealer's wax, a couple of coats of Z2/ZFX and some Z6 and the car looks great. One concern though. The Bi-Xenon headlamps on this car are mounted behind what appears to be Lexan lenses.

Any ideas on how to keep those free of scratches and clear?

I can see why Saab dropped the headlamp wipers for these lenses, using high pressure washer jets instead - still, they seem very vulnerable to me.

Any expert thoughts on this problem?

The Boxster and 911 also have lexan lenses--really big ones. I use Plexus with great success on them--which is what I also use to treat the taillights.

For regular cleaning, any QD works fine.

If you're really worried about them, you can get stonegard (or other brand) covers installed for probably about $100.

Thanks for the tips - I'll try out the Z for now including regular cleaning with Z6 - as for the stoneguards, if they get beat up I'll just have the dealer replace them rather than deface the front end. A mate had told me to be careful applying any product as it might affect the optics - although I doubt a micron thick layer of Z will have much effect - guess this is where Sal comes in with the "optically perfect" line.

Love the Boxter by the way...Oh, and look - the price is just inside my company allowance. Now that my wife has a car I'm not irritated to drive, I can get something really impractical for myself when my lease is up. It would certainly be a lot less black paint to polish than on my current ride.

The Boxster is super easy to detail and very rewarding because of the great curves in the quarter panels. And that's just the beginning...it communicates with the driver better than anything else on the road I've driven (and that includes the 996 911). Plenty of power with the 2.7 liter, but get the S if you can! :)

Have you ever tried Xpel? (it's just another name for 3M Scotchcal pre-cut for your car).

It's only about $70 for an 02 9-5

That includes Headlamp, Signal Lamp and Fog Lamp Kit (6 Pieces)

I think they even pay for a replacement if your lens breaks.

I discovered it a little too late for my 01 Lexus (lots of chips in 50k miles) but it's definitely going on my next new car.

I know several people using it, and you can't even see it.

atldave - thanks for the xpel tip - the description on the site looks pretty good. I notice they also make a paint protection kit for the Viggen body work on my Saab cabriolet. The cost including shipping to Belgium for my wife's car works out to just under 120.00 USD (about 115.00 EUR) - of course I'll be hammered with duties - but it's still cheaper than replacing the headlamp covers.

Again - thanks for the tip
