Leatherette upholstery

Car shopping, and noticed that on a BMW, leatherette trimed upholstery is standard on the 3 series. Just wondering if this a cloth material or a vinyl material, and is it worth upgrading to leather instead?

It is imitation leather and is more like vinyl. I personally would get real leather, but the option can sometimes add several thousand dollars.

I'm figuring the same. I thought it felt like rubber. The BMW website did say leatherette trimed, so I'm hoping the inserts are real leather.

Nope, vinyl. It's an image/marketing thing as there is no way someone would buy it if they called it vinyl. The only way that they are similar is the grain.

Given the price of aftermarket leather seat covers (auto leathers, katzkins, etc) I'd opt for that over factory leather. From what I've sean it's a much higher quality leather and for most cars the price is around $600-700. You can also customize it with suede, two tones, etc. for a more personal touch.
