Layering M21

Yes and No. M21 contains some light cleaners, so I believe you can layer but the subsequent layer will diminish the previous one.

From what I have read on the Meguiars boards M20 has the cleaners. M21 on the other hand is just stright sealent so you should be able to layer it. I just order some myself to use on my dad's car next week when he visit for Thanksgiving. He likes NXT a lot, but the whole durability thing was an issue. I am planning on using M20 as an AIO (or maybe #6, we'll see) and then layer with M21 for 2 coats (then top it off with M26). People on the Meguiars board says it looks good. We'll see.

I will try and let you guys know how it works out.

I'm going to try #7 today and 2 coats of 21 # for even coverage . After it cures I'll hit it with #26 . I'm also wondering If I can from time to time put the 21 over the 26 for protection , since its winter , maybe let the 21 be by itself for max durability , I'm not sure ... ideas welcome.

Well that is the thing with carnauba wax toppings over sealents. Once you do it, you normally cannot add aditional sealent over top becuse it will not bond correctly. You can add additional #26 if you want though.

For a Wisconsin winter, I would use Collinite 476S or IW to top with. It lasts a long time as long as you let the sealent cure.

Fallguy, as the #21 contains a weak cleaner package, the actual "layerabiliy" depends on the application methods. If you put the first layer on by machine, you'll utilize the cleaners to their full extent. If the 2nd layer goes gently by hand without pressure, the previous layer can survive *largely* intact (however solvents always clean a bit, no matter how you apply the product).

And 2 layers is always better for complete coverage...

I would go with #20 first then topped with # 21 the M20 is brighter then M21 is darker that would be a good contrast.

Even though my truck is metallic grey , I like deep , dark , wet.

how did you get on with 2 layers over #7? Also wondering how long to leave this between layers, or before topping with something like #26?

I've read that most silicone polymers can't be layered due to the agents used as lubricants-to help them apply easier. Of course any cleaning agents such as clay or chemical cleaners would also impact layerability.

Unofficial test ......

Today I did a #9 , #7 , followed by 2 coats of #21 . Then sectioned the hood off in three areas. Put a coat of AW on 1 , put a a coat of UQD on the second , and a coat of 425 on the 3rd.

All were sectioned off with 3" painters tape so there should be no over lap. But the base coats underneath are all the same as described above.

I know this is an older thread but I didn't feel starting new one was right.

Question: How long do I have to wait (Cure Time?) before applying my second coat of M21?

30 minutes is fine. If you have a dust free garage you can wait overnight and do the second application then. I have tried both countless times on the same cars and have never noticed any difference in looks or durability though.

I have never noticed a difference with either. I always do 2 coats just to be sure I have uniform coverage. I have tried more but noticed no difference in looks or durability.

I have also waited 30 minutes and 12 hours in between my two coats. I have never noticed a difference with looks or durability. That being said, when I'm doing one of our personal cars I always let the car sit over night before doing the second coat....don't ask me why. I guess it just feels like I'm doing something special for whatever reason.
