I just picked up a porter-cable 7336 and i picked up a few more pads.... They are white pads and are 6". I picked up one yellow pad because the guy said that it was like a cutting pad. Do i use the yellow pad for the #9? Do i use the white pads with the DC Polish and NXT wax?

Also, detailing a black car today.... Do you think i should use the DC polish and then NXT wax or just do the NXT wax?

Thanks....

I picked up my PC at lowes this weekend also. I wasn't too impressed with the white pad that came with it, although I realize I might need a heavier duty pad. I polished my girlfriends Celica that had never been polished, and thought that the white pad (polishing I presume?) coupled with some Meguiar's fine cut cleaner (#2) would knock out the light scratches that cover her entire car. While it did remove some swirls and reveal a gloss that hasn't been seen since new, the light scratches remain. Being a new user I was worried that I was going to take too much off the top, but it barely seemed to take any off. I not scared of the cutting pad anymore and plan on using one when my pad order arrives.

nice purchase. :)

for the pads, you want to use the least aggressive combo.

so first, on a small section like part of the hood, try one of the white pads with #9, and see if that removes the swirls. if it doesn't, then use the yellow pad with #9. this is assuming that those pads are like the lake county ones where yellow means cutting, and white means polishing.

white should be used with the DC Polish. NXT is your LSP (last step product) and should be applied with a finishing pad, a grey one.

if your are doing that black mustang you had posted pictures of earlier, i'd go:

1. wash

2. clay

3. #9 with white pad, or yellow pad if the white pad doesn't work

4. DC Polish

5. NXT x2 (12 hours between coats, if 12 hours isn't possible then 1 hour is okay)

good luck and have fun! :D

I used my cutting pad w/ DACP because I didn't think the polishing pad was doing enough. Used #82 SFP (hair more abrasive than #9 maybe) with a polishing pad. You wanna start with the least abrasive method you have (#9 + polishing pad), and work up if that isn't working. That's why I did what I did w/ the DACP.

FWIW, I've seen Scottwax recommend NXT on a polishing pad... :nixweiss

I suggest downloading the Autopia Ebook from my signature panel. It will guide you through the entire detailing process and also help you with choosing pads and how to correctly use the PC. Here's a word from the author:

"The Autopia Guide to Detailing is a Windows executable ebook. Click the link to download and save the file to your Windows Desktop. Click the red car icon to run the book. You will need to register your copy to get a password that unlocks all chapters. The author, David Bynon, sends free updates 2-3 times a year."

Ya, I'am attempting doing the same using #82 on LC white 7" flat pad and then NXT with LC grey finishing pad. I was told by a very experieence guy that the flat pads are the best with the most surface contact rather then using the contour poilish pocket pads which provides less surface contact.
