Just got a sea sponge - question

Have always wanted to try one of these so ordered one from autogeek. Should this go thru the washing machinge before first use (w/ liquid wash?) or just rinse in some water?
 
if you put it in a top loader washer i recommend using a lingerie bag. I put my new one in our washer and it wore the surface.
 
I rinsed mine out with water until I no longer saw sand in my bucket (which is clear). Luckily, mine didn't have much in it to begin with. Sponges rinse out much more cleanly than say mf mitts or wool mitts, so I haven't seen the need to put it in the washing machine. I just rinse with water after I'm done and before I use it the next time.
