hey guys, I got my truck back a few days ago from getting detailed luckily the owner of the shop owned me a few favors and did it free of charge.. Now is it safe to use those quick mist sprays without washing the truck ? or will road dirt scratch the car when I put it on then buff it off with a towel? and can you wash a car too much? how many times a week/month do you guys wash your cars?? thanks!

john

Yuo can use S&W's as long as the car is not too dirty. Anything heavy and I would wash. No, I don't believe you can wash too much. nor can you have a car too clean. Also, when using the S&W, get you some quality microfiber. ;) I tend to wash at least once a week. It is a habit out of boredom really. The truck sometimes doen't 'need' it, but I like to do it. If you can see dirt/dust, it's too dirty....clean it!

If you are using good shampoos and correct wash techniques, wash all you want. Using incorrect soaps, like dawn, can strip wax right off. Incorrect wash techniques and/or materials can cause scratches etc.

thanks guys, can using the poorboys stuff like the swirl mark remover/polish be harmfull to the paint/clearcoat over time of using it? thanks!

Depends on how long of a time frame you are talking. I seriously doubt that you would keep a car long enough to remove the paint using an abrasive product such as Poorboy's. Scientifically possible I suppose, but unlikely. Go ahead and use the SSR's :)

When you polish the paint you remove a very small amount of clearcoat. So like Jared said, scientifcally yes you could strip away your paint using an abrasive product. How long that would take however, I have no idea.

Steve? Technically speaking, approximately how much clear is removed with let's say ssr2.5? How many apps would it take to remove a typical clear coat?

I don't think using SSR2.5 with a PC or by hand really removes that much clear. The PC just doesn't generate that much heat and rotations. SSR2.5 breaks down pretty quicklyinto a significantly milder polish too. In other words, it would take quite a long time. Probably longer than you'll have teh car.

I got this bit of info from an article by Dave Bynon on Autopia called "Enhancing you Klasse Experience".

He wrote:

"A quick word about polishing. Internet myths would have many car owners believe that polishing is bad for your paint because it reduces clear coat thickness. This statement is true if you're using a rubbing compound or heavy cutting polish, but is not correct when talking about fine pre-wax polishes and gloss enhancing polishes. Fine polishes serve to keep paint healthy by removing microscopic surface oxidation. They also round over the edges of swirl marks to reduce or eliminate their visibility. To prove this to be true, I polished a single panel on my car every day for 30 days using P21S Paintwork Cleanser. At the end of the month I could not detect a reduction in paint thickness using an electronic paint thickness meter. "

I've never used P21S Paintwork Cleanser so I don't know if it would be the equivalent of PB Pro Polish so further investigation or more responses from DC members would be in order.
