Just bought a new car, when should I wax it?

First :welcome

Like Patrick said, I would deffinately wash then clay the vehicle. You will be surprised at how much you can remove from claying a "new" car. Depending on the color I'm sure alot of people wont give their opinions but Natty's from PB's seem to be very popular on all colors. I love Natty's btw, I use it when I can. This is what I would do

The basic routine around here is this:

Wash
Clay
Polish/Defect Removal
Glaze if you prefer
Sealant
Wax

Nice to see someone else from Louisville on here. Originally from Louisville myself but in Bowling Green (Bleh). Can't wait to move.

I wasted no time on my car. When I bought it in February it had three coats of wolfgang on it within 10 days. The weather was kind of crappy and that slowed me down, but I got to work right away. There is no need to wait and you can't start proper car care too soon.

We bought the wife one of these:

We bought it Saturday, I probably won't get a chance to lovingly wax it until this weekend. Should I handwax it or use the buffer?

I apply waxes by hand and remove with a m/f towel. If the wax is liquid you could get away with using a polisher like the Porter Cable. I can't see the need in apply a liquid wax with a Buffer like the Makita/Dewalt. Seems like it wouldn't be neccesary and would probable give better results with the Porter Cable. Someone will give their opinions as well so... Enjoy!

Congratulations on the new ride!!

You have already received some wonderful advice. The process used to paint most new cars today does not require a curing time. You can bring your new pride and joy straight home from the dealer and wax (assuming you prep of course).

Here’s another vote for a good clay job. You’ll be surprised how much clay will clean up your car and be very pleased as well.

All the advice given so far is great advice. I bought my car & 1 week later is when I decided to wash, clay & wax. There was a huge difference. Many new cars are transported via railway & the metal dust from the tracks/wheels can settle on the cars paint + the time it sits out at the dealer. Oh & congrats on the new car!!

Thanks...we were out there washing it earlier (using the 2 bucket method) and I was showing her that I need to clay the car before I wax it. She was looking at me like I am nuts. So I show her the clay and I show her the difference between the way my clayed Saturday 8 year old Celica feels and her never clayed month old Corolla feels. Now she gets it.
