Just bought a new car...need some detailing tips!

Hello everyone!

After a long hiatus from the forum (I looked it up, its been 5 years since my last post!) I have returned to Autopia. Reason being? I bought myself a new car: an '08 White Saturn Sky Redline. Let me first say that I never thought I'd own a Saturn or a white car - but this car is a blast to drive and I actually think white is one of the better colors on this car.

After a 5 year break, I seem to be out of the loop on the detailing products out there. I have spent the last weeks searching the forum for tips only to become more confused. Or maybe that's just a side affect of me getting older.

Some things to consider: It is a white car with only 10K miles on it. Everything still looks practically brand new aside from a few minor scuffs on the interior and the standard swirl marks on the outside. This car is also garaged, it is not my daily driver. I estimate it will see about 500 miles a month. With that being said, here are my questions...

Interior Trim: To be honest, I never really used anything other than Armor All type products, and I never was happy with the results. From what I've read, you can't go wrong with 1Z Deep Plastic. I've also read that I don't need to do anything really with the leather...is this true? It is a convertible and is exposed to the elements more than a standard car, if that makes any difference...

Paint Protection: I used the Zaino line extensively. I'd start with Z-AIO, then top with Z-5 and Z-2. Followed by Z-CS or Z-8. No complaints here, I'm comfortable with the process and know exactly what I'm going to get out of the products. However, I am willing to try others if you guys think there is better out there for a white car...I'm out of Zaino so I'll be ordering new product anyways!

Paint Correction: I have a PC 7424 and have become quite confident in my ability to use it over the years. The only products I used for "correction" were Merenza IP followed by Z-PC. Once again, no complains here but I have to order new product anyways and are open to suggestions. The white paint on the Sky is in good condition, aside from some minor to moderate swirling in some areas.

Exterior trim/Weather stripping: Here's a place I need help in also. I always used an Armor All type product, which I was never too happy with. From what I've read, 1Z works pretty good on the trim also and Gummi Pflege works pretty good on the weather stripping.

Tires: I'm pretty sure I used about 10 different products on my tires so I have no preference...from reading reviews on here I'm leaning towards Mothers FX. Any other suggestions?

Towels: I started out using PakShak waffle weave towels, until they were stolen. I then switched over to towels from Kmart and was pleased with them. This is the area where I'm most open to suggestions...stick with the OTC Kmart towels for drying and detailing, or go with something else?

Thanks in advance for the help...this forum definitely helped me out in the past. My 1998 Trans Am convertible still looks the same as it did 5 years ago when I was here!

You'll of couse get allot of opinions, so here's mine:

I like Optimum Protectant Plus because you can use it on Leather and Vinyl so it simplifies everything--I'll usually clean first with a mild APC. Inbetween applications just wipe down with a damp MF

Paint Protection: I used the Zaino line extensively. I'd start with Z-AIO, then top with Z-5 and Z-2. Followed by Z-CS or Z-8. No complaints here, I'm comfortable with the process and know exactly what I'm going to get out of the products. If you like Zaino take a look at Durgloss 105--similar look but much less involved and much less expensive--mixed 4 to 1 with DG 601 you can easily get 6 months protection. Or take a look at HD Poxy--a hybrid sealant/wax with a great look--3D International, LLC our major sponsor here

Paint Correction: I have a PC 7424 and have become quite confident in my ability to use it over the years. The only products I used for "correction" were Merenza IP followed by Z-PC. You may want to take a look at HD polishes--UNO offers moderate correction but can finish down LSP ready, but you may only need HD Polish if your paint isn't too bad--both are pad dependent, easy to use and remove, no dust, long working time, no heavy oils--up in the 3D section there are allot of posts regarding both. If you go this route keep in mind "less is more" with HD polishes-3-4 drops to prime--2-3 drops (or less) per section after that

Exterior trim/Weather stripping: Here's a place I need help in also. I always used an Armor All type product, which I was never too happy with. From what I've read, 1Z works pretty good on the trim also and Gummi Pflege works pretty good on the weather stripping.

Gummi Pledge has gotten some good reviews.

Tires: I'm pretty sure I used about 10 different products on my tires so I have no preference...from reading reviews on here I'm leaning towards Mothers FX. Any other suggestions?

Love the FX and you can't beat the price

Towels: I started out using PakShak waffle weave towels, until they were stolen. I then switched over to towels from Kmart and was pleased with them. This is the area where I'm most open to suggestions...stick with the OTC Kmart towels for drying and detailing, or go with something else?

ProForce towels from Sam's have a good reputation and MicroFiberTech.com has high quality MF at good prices

Hey!

Ok here goes my opinion:

Interior Trim: The best cleaner I have used is Blackfire Interior Cleaner. However, it is very expensive and I hate that. Using a mild all purpose cleaner to clean (like said above) is another good option. And then for the interior I am a huge fan of Ultima Interior Guard. It's like putting a sealant on your interior! It's pretty much like making "awesome" in a bottle. A little goes a long way, so even a few ounces is expensive, but you only need like 1 ounce for the entire interior.

Paint Correction: I ABSOLUTELY LOVE Optimum Hyper Compound and Hyper Spray. As the name suggests, they are a spray compound and polish. They don't dust, cut extremely well, and finish amazing. Coupled with Optimum Microfiber Pads and they are a force to be reckoned with!

Exterior Trim: CarPro DLUX. Doesn't get much better in my opinion. Priced well too!

Tires: I am a fan of CarPro PERL and Adam's SVRT. Both are non greasy, no sling tire dressings.

Towels: I am a fan of the Cobra Guzzler HD not the normal guzzler. The HD just absorbs water, it's magnificent. Pricey though. I am told there are lots of other options out there that work nearly as well for much cheaper... however, I am happy with my Cobra Guzzler HD.

Hope this helps! And in the end, my opinion is just another opinion. You have to test out what you like and what you don't!

Thanks for the replies guys!

So I've taken some of the suggestions from above and here's what I'm thinking of getting..let me know what you guys think about it...

Paint:

HD Uno

HD Polish

HD Poxy

Pads:

LC Orange

LC White

LC Red

Exterior Trim and Weather Stripping:

1Z Gummi Pfeldge OR 1Z Vinyl - Rubber Care -I'm a little confused on which one to get...

Interior:

Blackfire Cleaner - I'm on the fence about this one. What APC do you guys use to clean the interior panels?

1Z Cockpit Premium OR 303 Aerospace - since its a convertible I'd like something with good UV protection...

Towels:

Pakshak Ultasoft WW

Pakshak Silver Surfer

Any suggestions on the above? Anything I don't need that I have listed? Also, do I have the correct pads for the HD products?

Man, I've been meaning to reply to this from the start and just haven't had a second to do it. It's like 3 pages I would write so can't even start but please call me anytime and it would be much easier. First... BEAUTIFUL Sky! :) It is soooo much fun to drive isn't it!?! Mine (08 Sky Redline) was what shoved me into detailing and nobody loves their ride more than I love my Sky :). Email me or hit me up via phone if you want to chat. I know the Sky inside and out left and right and would be thrilled to help. Be happy to send you some things to try too.

Thanks man! I kind of bought the car on a whim, but boy am I happy that I did..it is a blast to drive! No one knows what it is, and when they find out its a Saturn they're always shocked. But yea I'll definitely get in touch with you, would help to talk to someone who knows the car.

Sounds good! It was a whim for me too... First spotted one in 07 when my buddy and I were at lunch. I said pull up to that car. What the hell is that! Got behind it. We were both like "a Saturn!?" We'll our other two cars were saturn sl. I wanted a Sky from that day. A year later test drove one, talked myself out of it. Then like 6 months later same as you on a whim... Getting on the interstate I saw one and pointed it out to wifey. She said you should do it. So we did when we were passing by the dealership a couple hours later!

On the weather seals skip 1Z and get Duragloss 531.

On the plastic and rubber trim get Dlux Sky kit.

Also if you want your chrome and wheels to pop apply Chemical Guys Butter Wet Wax on them--it's the best thing I've used yet to make them come alive!
