Jeep Hard Top

SquirrelMaster

You down with UPP?
I have a 2000 Jeep Wrangler Sport with a black hard top. The hard top is lightly faded and I am clueless as to how to restore it. It is fiberglass with some sort of powdercoat paint finish? Any advice on products?

If standard paint restoration products haven't done the job, what about 303 protectant. They recommend it for fiberglass boats. If you try it on a small area, you should know pretty quick.
Have you tried some of the Jeep specific boards?

Ive worked on a few Jeeps. Although I didnt have this problem with any of them.

You can treat the fiberglass top just like regular paint. If it needs a compounding and a polish I have learned that you can buff this fiberglass with no problems.

Look closely, try to determine if the problem is the finish or something on it. I say this since I cant look at it myself. If you look carefully and decide that the problem IS that the paint on the fiberglass is oxidized like an auto finish is sometimes then you can approach it like it is paint. Compounding, polishing, then waxing.

I have buffed on the jeep hard tops with no problems so if the trouble is the finish I would try buffing it.

Good luck,
John

I will try to buff it out and take before and after pics. Thanks for the info. Just by looking at the paint I was concerned that waxing it might result in an effect like wax on trim but I will do a sample area and go from there.

Well I gotta tell ya when I worked on Jeeps that had the removable hard tops they didnt look like trim it looked like paint. The hard top looked just like the rest of the Jeep and I treated them the same way. If its a different kind of top then its somethiong I havent seen before. I hope yours is like the ones I have seen.

Good luck!

John
