It Rained Before I Finished

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This was my first time trying to use a process. I went in this order:

1. Wash: Meguiars Gold Class Car Wash Shampoo & Conditioner

2. Clay: Meguiars: Smooth Surface Clay Kit

3. Wash:Meguiars Gold Class Car Wash Shampoo & Conditioner

4. Meguiars Deep Crystal® System Paint Cleaner

5. Meguiars Deep Crystal® System Polish

RAIN RAIN

6. I plan to use NXT GENERATIONâ„¢ TECH WAXâ„¢ 2.0

ALL OF THIS WAS DONE BY HAND, I WILL BE GETTING THE PORTER CABLE 7424 AND SOME PADS SOON!!!, it may get rid of some more scratches..What do you think?

Question: Can I dry it off and apply the NXT GENERATIONâ„¢ TECH WAXâ„¢ 2.0 or do I have to start over?

Question: Have some scratches that did not completely come out and unknown bleamishes that appeared not to be touched. Any suggestions what to do??

Question: I have alot of TAR in my wheel wells..Clumps big and small, What can I use to knock this out, they have been there over a year??

-shampoo: had long lasting suds and smelled clean, the conditioner seemed to darken up my black plastic mirrors and roof racks, but not my running boards or trim.

-clay: I saw contaminants on the clay and the finish felt like glass, I guess it did what is was suppose to do.

-paint cleaner: I read meguiars description of product, I did not really notice too much-not sure what to look for?

-polish: I was somewhat impressed. It got rid of some scratches completely, some faded. Some marks it did not touch, but I do not know what this marks are..acid rain, scratches..not sure what I am looking at.

Appreciate any suggestions/input.

Thanks-Mike

Dry it and continue.

If there were pollen/dust in the picture, I'd probably just hit it w/ a pass of a car duster followed by some Quik Detailer and then wax it.

You aren't going to get much of any correction by hand--you'll need a machine to do that.

Deep scratches are going to be tough to remove unless you're a very experienced detailer.

I'm assuming the Step 2 polish has fillers in it. Autopia is largely against products w/ fillers, because the results fade quickly.

I like the step 1 paint cleaner for light-duty jobs. Decent results w/ an orbital buffer w/ a foam pad. No big swirl reduction, but the surface gets nicely prepped, IMHO.

Best advice is to finish this job as planned and start reading as much as you possibly can on this site. It's a real education.

Welcome to the addiction.

If you're a noob detailer, you'll never get rid of your swirls by hand. I tried that for many, MANY years. Can't begin to count the number of products I bought, thinking 'OKAY! This will be the one that will remove all the swirl marks'.

Nothing worked - then I bought a cyclo and bam, took them all out on my first use with it :waxing:

How do I know if a product has "fillers" in it. I was hoping I was correcting the issue, not masking it. But it looks pretty good any IMO.

Thanks for the assistance-Mike

Personally I'd just do a quick rewash and then apply the NXT. Sometimes rain can leave some pollutants or droppings (if near any trees) and I like to make sure the car is clean again before I dry it off.

You can try ScratchX by hand, it's available locally and if the problem isn't too bad it does a fair job on small areas and is easy for a beginner to use. Below is a link on how to use it properly:

How to remove a defect by hand with ScratchX - Car Care Forums: Meguiar's Online

But, as others have mentioned, until you get a good polisher you won't see the results you're hoping for.

Buy a good bug and tar remover. If it is old and in clumps you can pick some of it off with a plastic razor blade. It might take several applications to get all of it off.

As gamby said start reading, there is a lot of good info here and you'll learn quite a bit by reading and searching.

i have in the past just utilized wd-40 and/or CRC spray. just spray and let soak. spray and soak. you get the picture. at one point the tar will soften enought to lightly scrape/push with a 1" plastic puddy knife. good luck.
