Is Wax dead?

Moved all my "sensitive" detailing stuff out of the house and back into the garage for the season. My son asked if that was my WAX. I said, I really don't have any WAX anymore.

It got me to thinking that I would really never use a WAX again. I was a die hard wax guy starting with Turtle wax, then P21S 100% for a long while, then I went to Ultima Paint Guard Plus WOWA, then I found TID that led to BFWD, then to EXO v1 & OC 2.0, then EXO v2.

With all the new long lasting sealants and coatings that look and feel amazing, why do through all the tedious, time intensive prep work, only to have a few weeks/Months of Protection?

So I ask you guys, is wax destined to go the way of the 8 track tape?

To me wax presents a different finish on the car, whether it's layered on the paint or topped on the sealant..

If what you are saying is wax going away because the sealant is better long lasting protection then that answer could be yes.

My favorite car finish is after the prep work is done..my last two LSP are sealant (two coats if I have the time) then topped with a good wax x2

I'm not always looking for the longest lasting protection my cars are garage queens and the weather in NO Cal is not that bad.

I really don't see any aesthetic benefit to putting wax over a coating like EXO. At least to my eye. I wonder if you have ever tried that.

I guess it depends on your goal. Mine is to Polish and Protect the best I can and then Have it last as long as possible.

So for me, wax is dead...............

Being someone that is just getting into the coating game. I can say that I love the stuff. Sure coatings last longer, are resistant to marring, and protect better. There is still a great feeling one gets when applying a high quality Nuba wax.
I don't think wax is dead. There are to many people that like to change up how thier paint looks from one month to the next, and it's not as easy to do that with a coating. But with advancements in Technology we can have the best of both worlds. Take pbl synergy for example. Just my thoughts.

This tells me everything about your car care goals and in that case then wax is not the best choice.

Agreed ;)-Not looking for force my views on anyone. Just threw it out there to get a reading.

Seems I don't hear much about Swiss Wax (vax) and they were once all the rage.

Sv is more of a request than go to, imo sv is different the most waxes because of the two step application of it.

I don't think wax is dead. I still use carnuabas all the time on my garage queens. I am very happy with the durability that I get from sealants on my daily drivers. I love detailing so I am always applying something to my cars just above everytime they are getting washed.

I have not bought into the whole coating craze as of yet. However, I do see that they have a purpose for those that don't have a lot of time to spend on their cars and need longer durability. I also see their needs for professionals offering this type of service for those that don't want to care for their cars on their own.

My fridge will always be full of waxes :)

Last wax i used was DP MAX WAX. And it provided a really stunning look. I have never used a true coating yet either.

I'm in the process of doing away with waxes or sealants. I believe coatings offer far better value, unless your using black ice... which IMO out preforms some of the coatings I've been playing with. Might not last as long but while its on the car... Better everything

No way!! I prefer waxes. It takes me as much time to wax my motorcycle as it does to heat up a Hot Pocket, so I enjoy doing it often. I've tried applying something more durable and leaving my bike alone, but I can't do it. I always end up in the garage applying a fresh coat.

A fresh coat of wax = fresh gloss and fresh slickness. I swear I have the best smelling bike in the world too lol.

The only time I prefer coatings/sealants if before a long trip. I recently remember applying DP Paint Coating on my bike before I hit the highway and I returned home with MUCH less bug guys on my ride. It was nice, but I went right back to carnauba lol.

I think modern advances in paint coating technology required wax makers (who don't want to get left behind) to come out with better waxes. BLACKFIRE BlackICE and Pinnacle Black Label Synergy come to mind. Technology will allow us to create better and better waxes, that offer even more intense depth of shine and prolonged durability.

Perhaps blackfire will be the first to market a wax coating? Who knows. Up till now BFWD has been my favorite sealant. Love the BF product line.

I'll take my waxes over any coating at this point in my life! Durability is not high on my list of L.S.P. expectations. I enjoy the whole process of applying a high quality paste wax. The feel, smell and look excite all my senses! I would not want to be without at least a modest collection of them.

If I detailed for a living I might think differently.

I have not but I will look it up now. I am really into the extended durability products. I used to use P21S 100% nuba. The beads were insane, but I was re-applying too often to keep it up, went over to sealants and stretched the durability to months with a slight drop off on water sheding. But the EXO has been a great experience. Near P21S water shed, for what is coming up on a year in 2 months. The look to me is amazing and the time it has saved me is priceless.

OC 2.0 is also an excellent choice in my book bc it is super durable, looks great and the only neg I can give it is feel and beads are not up to EXO standards but it is easy to wash, nothing sticks and it has better marr resistance IMO.

Have you not seen the new Pinnacle Black Label Synergy wax?
