Is this oxidation or clearcoat failure? pics inside

I'm new here so let me say that I've read the threads in the newbie section showing differences between clearcoat failure and oxidation. I still can't say for sure what I have at hand but I'm leaning more towards oxidation. The truck in question is a 1999 F250 SuperDuty with a 7.3L Diesel so my initial concern was that it was clearcoat damage because of underhood temperatures. After seeing the picture thread I'm not so sure.



If it is clearcoat damage and I try to use a DA and polish it would there be any adverse affects other than more damage to the clearcoat? Thanks in advance.

It looks like dirty paint(oxidation) to me. The pictures are at just the right angles to make it difficult to tell. You wont hurt anything by giving it a go as if it is failure then it needs repainting anyway. Try a small spot on the corner and see how much black paint you draw.
 
Usually diesels run at lower temps than gassers.



kinda hard to tell but it looks like CC failure to me.



If you wax it does the pad turn black? If it does then its oxidation.
 
It's hard to tell from those pictures, but I believe that is the start of failing clearcoat.



I snapped a good picture of clearcoat failure on my 18 year old Pontiac the other day.. Note the darker portions of red within the chalky white clearcoat, those spots are actually the exposed basecoat. :(

The pictures are very representative of what it looks like in person. I have some polish and wax I'll try by hand in a small spot and I'll post back the results. Thanks.

Water temps? Sometimes.



Underhood air on an N/A diesel? Probably.



HOWEVER, underhood air temps on a turbo diesel? No way they're lower than a gasser. A hard working turbo really heats things up.
