Is my friend heading for problems

Hi all, I had one of my good mates turn up at home the other day with his new car, so we all go out and have a look, I open the door and was instantly greeted with the familar leather smell. I had a look at the seats and they were vinyl, I was a little confused of course. He told me he cleaned them with some leather cleaner he had in the garage. He didn't know what it was called.

But will leather cream/cleaner damage the vinyl??

But for me, who does actually have leather seats and steering wheel. what is the best product do get that fabulous pungent leather smell back into the seats?? What can I say, I love the original leather smell.

Thanks

No, the leather cleaner won't hurt the vinyl. Depending on the mfr sometimes they're the same exact product with a different label. Vinyl is very hardy and can withstand a lot of abuse, that's why it exists!!

Some products are scented with a leather fragrance so look for those. But with time the leather aroma will dissipate. There is nothing you can do about it; its part of the aging process. In the meantime the smartest thing to do is to keep the entire interior clean. That will maintain the original look and feel.

no, I think he is on to something. Most leather is clearcoated. I think unless your vinyl is porous so that the leather cleaner gets stuck, you'd be fine. I've been wanting to try leather products on vinyl, but I haven't gotten a chance.

I dunno what particular leather conditioner is best.

I have some custom genuine artificial imitation leather (vinyl) seat covers that I just cleaned last week. I've been wondering what to use on them for a while and debated whether or not to use leather cleaner. I finally decided on Meguiar's #40 Vinyl & Rubber Cleaner/Protectant, mainly because of the "cleaner" part. It worked great -- it took off all the dirt and left them looking new. I also really liked the fact that it didn't leave an "Armor All" type of oily residue. They wiped down to a nice matt finish. I ended up treating the whole interior with it. The smell of #40 is a little strong, but it works very well. Here's a pic if you're interesed:

Good question, tegboy, and bretfraz has already given you solid info. What I've learned here is that vinyl is so much tougher than leather, that you can always use a leather product on vinyl. But, apparently the reverse is not true; it's a good idea NOT to use a vinyl product on leather, because the product may be too aggressive.

I too am hooked on the leather smell. I use Zaino's Z9 leather cleaner and Z10 Leather in a Bottle. The smell of the Z10 is awesome -- like mainlining leather. :D But, sadly, the smell does dissipate.

Z10 I will email Sal Zaino to find out if I can find the Zaino products here in Australia. Because I cannot find anything that can replicate that addictive leather smell.

Thanks Lynn, yet another post where you have saved my from making a mistake yet again....
