Is clay "clay?"

After reading one poster's enthusiastic support of one brand of clay, I was just idly wondering how automotive clay differs from clay that's sold at hobby shops. :nixweiss

I always wondered if silly putty, modeling clay or even Clay Aiken would work. We need someone to go to a hobby or toy store and get some and try it. Clay you buy for automotive use is a plastic polymer clay but you can buy polymer modeling clay.



So far I've been buying Meguiars because I feel all the consumer clays are about the same and Meguiars is the most reasonably priced.

I would stay away from using Clay Aiken if I where you. It uses up too much of your lube, and that stuff don't come cheap. :LOLOL

Yep, it's all protected by a patent or set of patents and a Japanese company basically has a monopoly on the market. Meguiars, Sonus, Mothers, Zaino, etc all get their clay either from Japan or by a stateside licensed manufacturer. It's just that the specs of said clay are different for each seller (color, aggressiveness, plasticity, etc).



For example, the new Sonus green clay is very soft and very very gentle. My experience with the Zaino clay is that it's yellow.



I don't know that I'd use modeling clay - natural or otherwise. It surely hasn't gone through any sort of refinement to remove impurities or particles that could damage the paint.

IIRC it wasn't modeling clay, it was clay used to stick stuff up on the wall...and there were some niggling concerns about contaminants in the stick-up clay (not that any were found, just that nothing in the stick-up application would be harmed by a little grit, while your paint would). Also, I think the stick-up clay fell apart in QD or wash or both...don't have time to search now...sorry..
