Is all clay different?

I would imagine like anything there is good clay and there's bad
clay. I noticed on another web-site there's different grades, sizes,
colors and lubricants. I've used mothers clay kit deal and it worked
like gang busters, but is there a better brand out there? Are there
more aggresive clays? Once again I would appreciate any information.
Thanks. I'm out.

Sounds like you have your answer. There are different grades, sizes, colors, etc. There is overspray clay that is meant for removing more than just the standard IFO that normal clay removes. That stuff is more abrasive and rougher on your paint and usually not found on the shelf at AutoZone. I've seen Meguiar's version of it and Clay Magic's version. I'm pretty sure that Meguiar's uses a different type of clay than Clay Magic, but I can't remember for sure. I don't do the kind of detailing that would require it anyway, so I don't worry about it.

You'll have to do some research on the different types of clay. From what I remember (and my memory isn't great) there are two types of clay made by only two companies. Everybody is selling relabled versions of those two clays. There isn't anything shady about it, that is just the way it is. Who uses which clay is something I don't know. From my experience I would say that Clay Magic, Four Star, and Mother's are using the same type. Meguiar's seems like something different, although I do imagine that these companies make different qualities of clay depending on the requirements of their clients.

Again, this is all what I remember reading a couple years ago. I don't know if the threads are here or on another board, but I know the lawsuit information is out on the web. Maybe someoene else can pitch in and clarify my hearsay. lol

Mothers Clay is my favorite. From what I understand there are only a couple of clay manufacturers in the world and they make the clay for all the different labels.

thats what ive heard too, only a couple of companies that make the clay. in addition, the clay that fourstar, pinnacle, etc.etc. use are re-labled clay. i dont know too much on this but this is what ive heard before.

supposedly one company that makes the clay is claymagic.

Clay Magic clay is made in Japan by Joybond Co. The other Japanese manufacturer is Source Chemical Inc.

Almost ALL of the clays are made here.

There are definitely two different and distinct "types" of clay. They are Elastic and Poly. They feel and work completely different. The elastic clays are soft and pliable where as the poly clays are much less pliable and a bit stiff. Within those two distinct "types" of clays are countless variations of color, grade and sizes.

So what does it mean if something is a "fine clay"? I ordered up some Four Star clay with some other stuff,...........is this good clay?

It's very good. Right up there with Clay Magic. In fact, it is very similar to clay magic clay. You picked the right stuff.
