IP vs #80?

Is #80 less abrasive than IP or are they very close? I just bought a new car and have very light swirls on the hood and trunk. I tried #9 but didn't do anything. I have SFP but never had luck with it so i stopped using it. My plan is IP followed with #9 and pinnacle signature as my LSP. The car is red metallic.

Yes sir # 80 is less abrasive than IP. 80 has always worked well for me, MUCH better that # 9 .

CMA has a chart that list the abrasive level of various polishes using the Meguiar's scale and the IP is listed as 6. #80 is a 4. Is this accurate?

Polish Chart

IMO that chart is not very accurate at all.

Here are a few things that I picked out that are wrong IMO.

A) 3M Finesse It II Machine Polish PN 39003 is ranked a 1. This stuff is for sure not a 1. I tested this side by side with Megs DACP and the 3M FI II easily removed defects in one application that took DACP several apps to remove. That CMA would rate 3M FI II MP a 1 is absurd. In my 3M catalouge it says FI II is able to remove 1500 sanding marks, on my Menzrena IP bottle it says it can remove 2000 sanding marks, yet IP is a 6 and FI II is a 1. Does not make sense.

B) 3M PI II FineCut Rubbing Compound is ranked a 5. Menzerna IP is a 6. 3M PI II FC RC is much more abrasive than IP. I own and use both. IMO IP is only slightly more abrasive than 3M Perfect It III Machine Glaze and MG is very mild.

C) Menzerna Power Gloss is ranked 8. According to CMA 'S product description PG is twice as abrasive as IP. If so why is PG only ranked two levels above IP on the chart?

There are several more mistakes I just listed a few.

I would use that chart as a very rough guide at best.

I didn't see Megs #80 on there. Where do you see it as a 4?

The chart has all the Meguiar's products, that have an abrasive scale listing, numbered the same as Meguiar's has it numbered. Meguiar's has #80 as a 4.

I too was a bit doubtful of the chart because in the individual product descriptions, 3M Machine Polish is said to be more abrasive than 3M SMR but the chart does not reflect this statement.

Have you used 3M MG, and do you have an opinion as to the abrasive level compared to #80?

I wouldn't say #80 and AIO are about the same. I'd describe AIO as more of a non-abrasive surface prepper or chemical cleaner. #80 can be used as a swirl remover, and also is loaded with oils if I remember correctly.

Perhaps you could say they both serve similar purposes, but they go about it in different ways.

Furthermore:

#80 has paintable polymers for added protection.

AIO = chemical cleaners (acrylic)

#80 = abrasive cleaners

correct me if I'm wrong. (been a fan of #80 for quite some time)

I have both and Id say that #80 is a bit less agressive, but easier to work with. Beign easier made removing swirls less of a task with my PC.

As for your swirls, did you try FP? Your car is brand new and you shouldnt need something too aggresive.

When I got my car last may, I used FP and it removed all swirls with no effort. #9 doesnt work that great for me.

#80 is poorly named, maybe that's what leads to so much confusion. And it was incorrectly placed on the Meguiar's abrasiveness scale (this was per Mike Phillips) and I dunno if they ever fixed that.

#80 is an abrasive polish (unlike AIO which is a chemical cleaner that's basically nonabrasive based on my tests on sigle stage).

Yes, #80 does leave behind some fresh-paint-safe polymer protection, but it's not much and it'll wash off easily (as in, in a heavy rain or one wash).

#80 is more abrasive than 3M PI-III MG, but not much.
