Introduced my friend to detailing today

At my last job, I had talked to one of my coworkers about car wax a couple times and promised to show him what my "good stuff" could do. He held me to that promise :) So I introduced him to a low-level of Autopia style detailing today, using his bright red Monte Carlo as the subject.

Didn't take before pictures because I was afriad that rain was incoming and I wanted to make sure we got it washed, so in my hurry I forgot. Oh well, use your imagination ;)

He had a bra on the front of the car that had not been removed in over a year.. Through car washes, rain, snow, etc. Not sure the damage done to the paint was worth the tradeoff of a couple rocks not dinging it up. Took quite a bit of Tarminator and clay to get it cleaned up. There was a line of 1cm long scratches running the entire edge of the bra. Yech. I warned him about the damage the bra was doing last year, he didn't listen :(

Wheels weren't too bad, A2Z cleaned em right up w/o hassle. Tires dressed w/ TOL Grape stuff. He was pretty disgusted by the gunk that the A2Z cleaned off.

I showed him the plastic bag trick with the claybar. He was really impressed as he had never heard of detailing clay before. I did half the hood, and gave him the bar to do the rest of the car as I used an old claybar & IG on the windows... he had about 1/3 of a Poorboy's bar and it was pretty much done after he finished the rest of the car. I don't think he could knead it to get a clean surface!

Crappy lighting in the garage and it was really overcast today, so I had a hard time seeing the swirls that I knew were there from seeing the car a couple months ago. I was able to tell that Pinnacle Swirl Remover wasn't doing the job on the hood, so I moved up to DACP on a cutting pad just for the hood. Used the Pinnacle on a Sonus green pad for the rest of the car because DACP just wasn't acting nice on the hood. After that, just a coat of EX-P. He was quite happy with the way it looked, and I think I was too -- because I couldn't tell what kind of swirling was left! I showed him how to apply the EX-P and let him go to town with applying and removing it.

As I was polishing, he worked on the interior.. cleaned everything w/ Woolite & water, dressed everything w/ Poorboy's Natural Look. That seemed to be the product that impressed him the most. He loved the look on his black interior (leather & dash) and the cherry smell. He said he'll probably order that and some EX-P (though I said he ought to try something different, just to try something different..)

I was disappointed with how the pictures came out as they really didn't show the gloss of the car. It looked pretty nice, but seemed a little "flat" to me :nixweiss Perhaps it needs a carnauba, or a different sealant. Pics are here.

Overall, he was quite happy with the time spent.. and even happier that he didn't have to pay me anything (but he promised me a steak dinner cooked by his fiance)... speaking of his fiance, her gave her my email address and she emailed me begging me to make her car look "sexy" too. Hah! They're looking to move from an apartment to a house, so maybe I'll get him hooked on detailing when he gets a garage (I have to use mom's...).

Wow, I typed more than I thought!

Nice! There is a guy here that has a TV show called MN Bound. He ends every segment with "And dont forget to introduce a id to the outdoors."

We always seem to be something similar her on Autopia. "Dont forgert to introduce a stranger to deatiling"

I'll tell ya, a properly detailed *RED* colored car looks just as good as a properly detailed black colored car IMO.

Very nice depth on that car, nice work!

Yea, red does look nice, and his car looked nice when we were done, but it just seemed like it was missing something. Seemed very glossy to me, but almost too glossy! I dunno. I figure with washing, claying, and polishing that it was pretty well prepped (coulda done more polishing of course) and ready for EX-P.

Good news is that he said he'll probably keep the bra off :up

In the sea of people that don't appreciate a nicely cleaned car, it's refreshing to find a couple folks that do :woot2: :buffing:

Looks awesome if you ask me. Great job! I am not sure what you are missing?

I also think it looks very good Perry! If EX-P seemed too glossy for your eyes, maybe a carnauba topper (or just EX) would bring it closer to the "look" you want (more warmth and depth)?

Man, I couldn't agree more. BTW, where in MD are you?

I bet you're thinking it looks "flat" because its so over cast...it looks Autopian to me...wait until the sun hits that deep red, it won't be 'flat' anymore

Emailed my friend the pictures..

And thanks again for your direction and help on my car, I cant tell you how much I appreciate it, this car NEVER looked this good!!

And..

My uncle asked how much you would charge to do his mustang, he livespretty close to you. If you ever want to make some money from it let me know because he would pay you.

If I didn't have to do the work out of my mom's garage, I would think about taking him up on it. I guess this is how the pros get started and get referrals!

I know he's waxed the car before, but it's never had a good prep job done to it. I should tell him that we'll use whatever wax he has on his fiance's car just to prove the point that the prep is the most important part!
