Interior Detailing Material that peels 2000, 2001

Hi all. I have a question about interior detailing. I've noticed that at least a few car makes around the 00, 01 model years used a material that starts to peel off. The material is kind of a thin padding covered with a very thin layer that gives a good color match to the leather and vinyl. Does anyone know what this is?:nixweiss If so, are there any products out there that will hide the peeling / flaking or at least prevent any further wear?

If you're familiar with the 2000 BMW 328ci, the bulk of the material I speak of is located in the center console where the hand break and cupholders are. I've also seen it in the 2000 and 2001 VW Jettas. I'll try to post a pic as soon as my better half returns with the car today.

Thanks in advance for any insight.

Ok, here's the pic of what I'm referring to in this thread. I took this picture from the back seat because the peeling/flaking is most conspicuous in this area. The lighting isn't great in the shot, so I hope it shows up ok. I can try to take some more shots in better light if necessary but wanted to get this up.

Thanks again!

is it the little bit of peeling on the left part of the console we're looking at?

i think it's just fading/oxidation or something similar. it's happening on the bottom corner of my TJ's dash board. its a black dash, that has sort of faded to a white-ish color.

i would try B2B for mine, but since you have a lighter color interior, i dont know what would work...:nixweiss

Absolutely. It's also on the right and the top left if you look closely (I had to lower the resolution and shrink the pic to attach it.) Interesting that it could be some sort of oxidation. I don't think I would just call it fading though because there's definitely pieces of material flaking off, and you can see a the layers at the edges of the peeled areas.

i dont know that its 'oxidation', persay, but possibly a defect similar to it. i could imagine something like this could be the result of spilling a very harsh chemical or even a coke on the console and not tending to it immediately. i dunno, though. the defect in my TJ isn't 'peeling', just the fading...:nixweiss

Yeah, I guess it could have been something spilled because someone else owned this car for 4 years ;) . However, I seriously doubt it because the peeling is happening in multiple places where this material is. It would have to have been a serious spill! Additionally, one of my wife's friends drives an 01 Jetta with the same material scattered throughout the interior. Hers is peeling way worse than mine, and she's never spilled anything on it. Maybe I'll ask her if she ever used windex or some kind of ammonia cleaner on the material :nono .

My best guess is that car manufacturers used this particular material on model years around 00 and 01 without knowing the long term negative effects of it.

possibly. they might have issued a recall on the trim pieces using this material, though that might be a stretch. maybe take it by your local bimmer-ship and compare it to modern materials, and ask if they know of anyone else having the problem.

my 2001 Jetta is peeling as well. I'll post pictures tomorrow for you to see. Not much we can do exept replacing the part.

I figured that might be the only remedy:angry . I wonder if there are any products out there that would address this specific material and prevent further damage. OTOH, I guess at least it will look uniform when it all peels off:p .

I have seen that in two VW Beetles on the door handles and I don't think you can use any products to correct it. The paint applied to these plastic panels has a rubber like texture and seems to rub off anywhere it is exposed to friction/handling. The dealer replaced all effected panels in my girlfriend's old beetle since it was still under warranty so maybe you could try that.

It must be a german thing. I see this quite routinely on VWs and BMWs but never on anything else. Its really strange, it is like peeling skin...

No idea what you can do to hide it...
