Interesting read

I saw that.

The auto industry is going to have to drastically improve if it wishes to survive this upcoming generation.

Moreover, in survey after survey, Gen Y'ers say that they believe cars are damaging to the environment. Even hybrid electric vehicles don’t seem to be changing young consumers’ attitudes much.
Their attitude about cars related to environmental damage will also diminish aftermarket sales of parts and even detailing supplies. An industry shift will have to be made if they wish to entice them to buy, keep and maintain cars.

I wonder how many of the Gen Y'ers engage in auto detailing as a hobby.

Saw that the other day, and I have to say I think the article is a bit biased. Maybe in the author's area there are a bunch of tree hugging hippies, or just an urban environment where vehicle ownership would be impractical and public transportation is readily available, but that's not the case everywhere.

Now, with that said, I do think that Gen-Y folks tend to be a lot less brand loyal than generations past were. Our global consumer culture has caused a lot of people to care much more about bottom-line perceived value for money as opposed to the origin of whatever they are buying or a desire to offer continued support and patronage to a particular business.

Well I have a 14 year old son that is chopping at the bit to get his driving privileges and get a car.

Don't think he falls into those stats

Once again I think this is the liberal media out there trying to tell the young, impressionable people that if you own a car, you are solely responsible for destroying the Earth. I'm 23 so I definitely qualify as a Gen-Yer but don't identify with my generation AT ALL. I took an online quiz (for what it's worth) and answered 50 questions. I fit in between the Silent and Greatest Generations so that should give you an idea of where my mindset is. For the most part Gen-Yers are shallow and don't even know how to think for themselves. It's by far the most government-indoctrinated generation we've yet had. I'm not trying to start a firefight but this is honestly how I feel.

Blah blah blah...tree hugger hippies...liberal media...secret Muslims from Kenya infiltrating the auto industry...blah blah blah

Times change and so do buying habits, tastes and values. To attribute it to some imaginary grand conspiracy is grasping at straws. A global economy has blurred the lines of what an American product is. Which is more American? The Ford produced in Mexico or the Toyota produced in America?

Some people feel the need to reduce the use of fossil fuels. How is that a bad thing? It is still a limited resource. The auto industry and its aftermarket is not going anywhere in any of our lifetimes.

I was also chomping at the bit at 14 to get the keys to the family car or my own car. But, my intentions were not to get a car, but to get a girl "in" the car. :)

My Ford Fusion is made in Mexico.

i do not know if I believe the survey. I am sure it is easy to say they use blackberries, iphones, xbox, etc, more than any prior generation but if there is any brainwashing it probably came from their parents.

They may have some point, but I don't really take this article that seriously. I think they may not have counted the fact that 18-30 yr olds are some of the highest % unemployed as well.

You can't buy a car w/ no credit and no job. I don't think people are giving up driving b/c they are very environmentally conscious, but maybe more so that the dollars just don't make sense right now.

This Ford Fusion made in Mexico is my first American nameplate since 1982. I owned Honda before then. Those were made here in Ohio.

My wife's Sonata was made in Alabama. It's quite impressive in quality, performance and appearance.

The Ford has 1600 miles on it and so far I'm very satisfied with it.
