Interesting experience with 3M IHG

Hi,

I saw some bird poo on the fender of my car today, which I hadn't noticed yesterday. It was already dried and I knew that it had already eaten the clear. So I sprayed some QD and gently removed it. But I could still see the etched clear (about 1/2" diameter). I've tried some vinegar/dest. water solution with no go.

Then I've decided to use some IHG to see what would happen. And guess what ? The burned spot was gone !

Anyone has an explanation for it ? I thought IHG was some useless stuff, at least that is what I've learned from this board.

Any input is appreciated.

IHG has lots of fillers. The etching was just filled in temporarily as IHG will not last too long. If you wiped over the spot with a little alcohol to remove the IHG the etching should be visible again.

IHG is not necessarily useless but perhaps better product types are available for what we are trying to achieve on this forum. As you have said, the etching disappeared. The IHG will keep you sane until the etching can be addressed for a permanent solution.

thanks for the reply. I know the IHG has only fillers. That is the part which amazed me though. It must have 'filled' the etching so damn good that there's visually nothing visible. Not under good lighting, not even under the bright sun. The spot where the poo sat is absolutely flawless.

I'm a bit confused. Anyway, thanks again.

Go rub the are with alcohol to remove the fillers to see how bad your etching is.

It might not have been etching... I've had bird poop sit on my cars for days and it doesn't etch the paint. Instead it leaves this very thin residue on the paint that is a pain in the butt to get off. If I can ever figure out how to get my digi cam to focus on the surface of the paint and not the reflection I'll try to get a picture.
