Infiniti G35: Engine Paint & Lights Concours Auto Salon

Hello All,

Figured I would share with you some paint and lighting enhancements we did to an Infiniti G35S.

We had detailed the entire car several weeks back including the engine and the owner then wanted to add some bling so we suggested engine bay lights, interior lights and some engine paint to spruce it up.

So this "before" pic of the engine will not show a drastic difference between dirty and clean but more so to show the engine before the paint and lights.

We removed the engine cover and also the two covers over the battery and brake fluid areas. The major concern here is proper prep or the paint will not adhere to the plastic. This plastic needs to be "sweated" so to rid it of all the releasing agents used in the manufacturing process. So after that process, sanding and priming we laid down some candy red then masked that area off to lay down some metallic silver in the center area. Then cleared it.

We then began the lighting up process. We went with red throughout except for the Infiniti logo which was underlit with blue LED's

Here is the finished look.

We also added some red LED's just above the tops of the chrome exhaust tips. These come on when the brakes are pressed.

This car is all black except for the brake calipers so to break up the black somewhat I painted the Infiniti wheels logos a candy red.

The chrome trim around the doors, which framed the glass, stuck out like a sore thumb so I painted those in a flat black.

We also added some interior lights, red also, to the foot well area and also to the doors side pockets and center console cup holders which gives the interior a slight red glow. To top it all off we installed some under body lights but I don't have any pictures of that work, sorry.

Well thanks for looking,

Anthony

Your shop is really turning out some unique stuff!

How do you "sweat" the engine cover?

Torch it! You need to run a torch over it to sweat out the release agents. Plastic will turn glossy, then rub down with 91% IPA immediately. I should of sanded more texture out though as in made it flat and smooth. The texture in the plastic makes the clear look like it has massive orange peel and thus reduces the gloss.

Thanks Scott

Anthony Orosco- While my stodgy old taste isn't exactly in tune with this kind of upgrading, I sure do appreciate your skill!

That was good info about "sweating" the plastic as prep for painting.

Any trick to getting the paint to stick to the Infiniti logo on the centercaps?

Heh heh, blacking out that side-window trim is a bit of a job to do properly, but all in a day's work for you guys, huh? That was a great idea, looks much better :xyxthumbs

Nice! So how did you do the back-lit Infinity emblem on the engine cover? I'm sure you had to cut it out of the engine cover but what is suspending it with the gap around the edge to see light through?

Howdy,

yes this is not perhaps my taste either but its a young kids car so it fits well with him.

The center cap pieces just needed to be scuffed up well then primed. A plastic promotion is good to use on these plastic pieces.

I personally hate the chrome trim around windows that car makers use.....just boogles my miund as to why they do it when it looks so out of place on many sport type vehicles, like the Porsches.

Thanks,

Anthony

Thank You.

It had to be removed CAREFULLY or you'll break the delicate pins that hold it in. After that its just a matter of drilling holes and measuring the lights properly so the emblem is able to rest just enough to allow the LEDs to "glow" around the emblem. Sounds easy but it is delicate work.

it is perhaps the best part of the whole project.

That's really fantastic work, as always, Anthony!

I always admire your delicate, beyond detailing work. I remember that time you disassembled a Mercedes' foot pedals just to polish up the plates. Keep these great jobs coming!
