I'm vinyl wrapping my Lexus.

I decided that I'm going to do a satin black finish on my car. After realizing how tedious a real paint job would be for this, I looked for an alternative.

I figured that the vinyl wrap option would work best for me. I got a quote today for $1,500 to do it professionally. Not terrible, but I can do better.

I'm going to do it myself. Some of the older members may know I'm relatively anal about my car and pretty good with detail type jobs. I'm confident that I can do it and do a pro-quality job.

What I want to know now is where I can buy quality vinyl to be shipped to me. I'd rather not buy it through the local shop because they'll get their money out of it. I need to know about the different brands/grades of vinyl and how each one differs.

Any advice would be appreciated.

TIA

And I just noticed that this would be my 2,000th post, and I haven't had a picture of my car up in forever, so here's a recent one:

A little blurry, but that's the best I have. Yes, that's a door ding. Got it at college.

The Vinyl piece needs to be perfect and since your so anal doing such a large area you might go crazy, broke or both till you do.

$1500 is dirt cheap and almost all material you're much much better off letting someone that does this for a living do it for you. But if it's a hard lesson you want to learn just call up your local vinyl shops and ask them where they get the material from.

I agree 1500 is not bad at all for film.

Don't try it unless you have the tools and the correct soap/wather mix etc or you'll end up with a mess.

Yes you can order film re-cut from dealers that do film installs, but unless it's just a small area, I would not attempt it.

You want it to blend into the finish, not stand out like a sore thumb. You can always tell amature installs from those that install film on a daily basis.

I'm not sure what you mean by "blend into the finish." The vinyl would completely cover the paint surface.

Setec, i've been great. Just finished year one of college and now I'm opening my own business here locally in VB. I don't know why I wanna do this to my car. I like the look I guess.

Good, you've got years on me, then, I didn't learn to be a smart *** until much later. I can see you're going to be a lot more successful than me....

I've given thought to flat black wrapping my Vue Redline a few times. I think eventually I'm just going to two tone it with some glossy black wraps on the roof and top and possibly hood.
