I'm not a (PC) virgin anymore !!

WOW !! What fun a PC can be.

I raced home from my morning errands (25K service on the Jetta) and broke out the supplies. After a thorough scrubbing of my wife's car (1996 Volvo 960) to get rid of a week's worth of construction debris from the Palmetto (lots of tar and crud), I pulled into the garage and dried thoroughly. After a little lunch and a dip in the pool to cool off, I clayed the trunk lid with Pinnacle PolyClay to a smooth finish. So far, so good. The trunk and roof are roughly (pun intended) in the same condition, so this is my comparison viewpoint.

I got ahold of my PC 7336 SP and pad kit from CMA along with the 3M SMR (dark formula) and Viper Detailing cloths. After buttering the yellow pad with SMR, I set the speed to "2" and went at it. It took a while to get used to the vibration (makes it difficult to type!), but soon got the rhythm down. I increased the speed to "6" towards the end. After wiping off the residue, I saw some pretty good improvement, but felt I still didn't have the technique right yet.

I put more SMR on the pad and reset the speed to "2" (gotta remember to do that!). This time I bared down a lot more and really worked it in. As the as the SMR began to haze (and the petroleum distillates began to smell stronger) I increased the speed to "6" and increased the amount of pressure so that the PC was really working hard (and heating up!)

By this time, I think I was really getting the hang of it. I noticed the SMR breaking down to a fine powder and began to lessen the pressure on each pass over the panel. By the 8th or 10th sweep, I was only guiding the machine and letting only the weight of it rest on the panel. I made 2 more sweeps and turned it off.

NOW I can see the difference! The trunk lid was not in too good a shape at all with many scratches, some of which I have no hopes in removing. But many of the other swirls and light scratches were either gone or significantly reduced.

I SMR'd 3 more times, and felt that I was at the point of deminishing returns. I'm still quite pleased with the results, and the scratches that still exist are much less noticeable. At this point, the finish is almost as smooth as glass. I'd gone from a point where I could only see the glow of a lightbulb in the ceiling to reading that it's a 100 watt bulb from Sylvania. Pretty respectable, I think. :xyxthumbs

I moved on to the P21S Paint Cleansing Lotion with a white pad and did 2 sets of that, using the same technique as above. After buffing, I noticed that the scratches that remained are more rounded over and smooth. Much, much better.

On to another white pad and Klasse AIO. Just one set of this using the same technique as above. And finally, 1 set of Klasse SG, once again, using the same technique as above.

While waiting for the SG to set up, I'm in here exercising the fingers and posting my results. The time's up so, off to put on a wool pad and Viper MF Bonnet and buff it out. Then out into whatever sun is left to see how my handiwork turned out and to take some photos (which I'll have to develop and scan (unless someone wants to donate a digital to me (hint, hint))).

Not only that, but I think that the wife is only partially peeved at me for the expense, since her car is looking a lot better. At least I hope so !!

I'll add more afterwards, as dark is only 2 hours away, so I don't think I'll get much farther tonight. I still have to figure out how to wash the pads, too.

Continuation:

I put on the wool pad and one of the Viper MF bonnets and buffed off the SG. I noticed that there were some areas where it didn't want to come off easily, but a few shots of detail spray and the PC on full speed, I was able to buff everything to a really nice gloss.

The roof will be my next target and if there's time remaining tomorrow, then I'll add another layer of SG to the trunk lid. The rest of the panels will have to wait for next weekend. I also want to at least have an hour to wash my car, too!

I rinsed out my soap & rinse buckets and made up a new solution of PowerWash+ to wash out the pads. Since the SMR pad had been out the longest, I started with that. I am using the dark color formula, so the yellow pad was really dark gray. A few moments scrubbing produced a nice clean pad. After rinsing well and squezzing out as much water as I could, I reattached the pad to the PC and at the highest setting proceeded to get my belly wet from the spray. This worked really well, but left the center of the pad still a little wet. After about an hour, they were completely dry.

My last thing to do was to wash all my towels. Interesting experiment/hint that seems to work well for me. I add 1 full scoop of OxyClean and 1 quarter scoop of Tide Free to the washer (Hot wash/Cold rinse with an extra rinse cycle) and find that it does a fatastic job of getting rid of all dirt, polish, etc. Give it a shot. The 6 lb bucket we bought for $20 at Costco has lasted us over a year. We use it for primarily washing the tile floors in our house, but it has a lot of other uses, too.

Sorry for the long post, but like with my first time Klasse experience, I got carried away!

I used my PC for the first time today, I was using some PPCL. My white pad (as i worked around the card) got gradually darker and darker in color (when I was done it looked black).. I started to wonder if my car had a clearcoat... but it looks like it was stuff I couldn't see/get off when I wased the car. It came out easily when I washed the pad...

Anyway, it took me a good few hours to do my car with PPCL (the power went out in our whole neighborhood) so I took some time to treat the leather in my car.. but I never finished that either... I still need to do the panel of one door and half of the backseat yet.

My lower back is killing me right now, one thing I *HATE* about detailing is being hunched over.. last time I did my car (6 hours worth in one sitting) I was doubled over in pain for the next day.. sigh

Anyway, so far so good with the PC, I need to SMR my car next..

Then I still need to wash, dry, Z5, Z6, Z5, Z6, Z5, Z6.. and vacuum, do the rest of the leather, get my rims squeaky clean, shine up my tires... shine up my trim...and somewhere in the end Z2... but that'll have to wait for another day...

Jim - congrats!

You did the right thing by going up to 6 and letting it dry and warm - this breaks down the original abrasives and returns a high gloss. Failure to do this (or trying by hand) will leave quite a haze with 3M SMR.

On the other hand, 3 coats seems excessive, and I'm not sure there is any advantage to starting on 2. I go straight to 6 with smr - first thing I do is spread the material I put on the pad over the entire area I intend to work (I divide the hood into 1/4's. Then I just go to work. I'm using about 4 drops of compound per section (a drop being the size of a dime or less, but 3x thicker).

So - you may be able to save even more time. On the other hand, if you really needed 3x applications - next time you have swirls that bad you might try 1x FI-II followed by 1x SMR.

Thanks Carguy. Hopefully, there won't be a next time to fix something this bad. It's been a good learning experience.

hmmmm, ok you guys got me thinking

i was using my pc last weekend with 3m waffle pads, and i noticed that at speed 6, SMR leaves scratches behind:eek: , so my solution was to spread the ompound around at 2, and move to 5. and it left a supper glossy swirl free finish.

hmmm, could it be the pads?

tomicob - scratches come from trapped dirt. Super, super fine scratches - which appear as haze - come from SMR not worked enough. I can't come up with any explanation why the higher speed should scratch more, though - it is simply working the material faster and a little warmer. I suspect this was a coincidence.

DOes SMR NEED to be applied with a cutting pad, or can it be done with a white polishing pad? I was told to be weary of cutting pads, and to use the polishing pad.

thoughts?

The foam cutting pad with PC and SMR is good to go, or you can use a stronger polish such as 3M FI II if the finish is in bad condition.

The pads you want to be acreful with are the 4 ply or 2 ply yarn wool cutting pads. These are primarily used to cut down old one stage paints and used by a pro to blend repairs in a body shop.

I have used the lambswool polishing pad with a medium cut compound to bring back some really terrible finishes (like my parents corolla.)

It all depends on what you want to achieve. A foam polishing with SMR to follow up a foam cutting pad with FI II is fine.

I will remember to let the FI II break down this time on a dark blue 1999 Corolla with 80K plus. I got some before pictures, its dirty but I believe the Klasse is still on there (for 11+ months ago and after a few touchless washes in the NJ winter plus swirls induced by a wet rag by a dude going through male PMS.) When I FI II this car last summer, I don't think I broke down the fI II enough, 85% of the swirls were gone, but I think I could of done better. This time I will make it perfect before Zaino and the temperature is just right. I will try for 12 coats of Z on the car (9 of Z5 and 3 of Z2, Z-6 in between each and every coat. I have Saturday, Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday with the car. Then engine detail (conquer my fear and make the engine shine, even after 80K of no one cleaning the engine), complete interior detail (two kids, food = mess), polish up all the glass, and do the finishing touches. Extensive review will come in product review section.

Jason

Hey Jason,

I've been working on a '94 Tbird that never saw a vacuum or cleaner in the interior, with a smoker as a driver. Let me tell you -- it's looking better, but still needs more help!

I've used stoner's invisible glass on the front window, Plexus cleaner on the sides and rear (tint), wet cloth with dawn to wipe down vinyl, dry towel immediately after, applied 303 to dash, side panels, weather stipping, etc. Lexol leather cleaner and conditioner for the steering wheel and shift knob.

Now, what about the carpet and seats...? I've vacuumed and certainly cleaned it up...but I have stains!!! particularly on the drivers side... I have a bissell carpet cleaner, but can't seem to find one specific cleaner that everyone recommends... what have you used or plan to use on that Corolla? :nixweiss

I don't have one of those bissell cleaner machine things, but I do have a $30 Stinger from Home Depot, the 2 gallon wet/dry vac. I am going to use this to give the car an initial vac and reach the hard to reach places. I am going to get either a 6 gallon or 9 gallon Rigid wet/dry vac from Home Depot Saturday. I am not sure which one yet based upon size. I want one not to big, yet not too small for home (at my house detailing) use (the stinger will be my mobile vac.)

I plan to use Valugard's Omni All Purpose cleaner for the carpet and dash areas. Its not a strong cleaner, looks like diluted EF Hi, but it gets the job done (10:1 dilution rate, pretty good stuff for interiors.) For stains I will use EF Hi-Intensity, especially on that mystery back carpet stain. I will follow up with a through vac with light mist of water to carpet/upholstry to remove remaining residue. I will then use 3M protectant on upholstry and carpets to protect them.

I'll look into these bissell extractor type things. If I see it on sale and I have the cash. I'll get one of them too.

Jason

PS (Eagle One leather cleaner and conditioner review to be done of the living room leather sofas!)

Jason, I have both the stinger and the Rigid.

The stinger doesn't get alot of dirt out for me. Don't know why.

The rigid wants to take the dirt and the carpet with it.

I need a mid point.....

Well made the trip to home depot today (gotta go again tomorrow for more wall base and the finishing touches on the floor) and got myself a 3.5 hp (doesn't really matter) 9 gallon Rigid wet/dry vac for 54.97 plus tax and 9.95 or so for the muffler (quiets the vac, gonna try and see if it really works.) A big step up from the weaker stinger.

I'm going to put it to use this weekend.

mid point..the 6 gallon wet/dry vac???
